Synopsis

The third Thane Creek Bridge (TCB-3), a vital 1.8-km six-lane link between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, is now complete and awaits final approval for inauguration. Executed by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation at a cost of INR 850 crore, the bridge aims to ease traffic on the heavily congested Sion-Panvel highway, which sees over 1.3 lakh vehicles daily. Civil work finished in April, but the opening is pending clearance from the Prime Minister's Office and the Ministry of Road Transport. Once inaugurated, TCB-3 is expected to significantly reduce commute times and enhance regional connectivity between the two growing urban centres.

A crucial infrastructure project that connects Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, the third Thane Creek Bridge (TCB-3) is finished and awaiting final approval before opening. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), which executed the INR 850 crore project, confirmed that the bridge is technically prepared for public use.

Earlier this week, officials from MSRDC stated that they were awaiting confirmation from the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways regarding the bridge's formal inauguration date. Once this clearance is received, the bridge will be thrown open to the public.

The six-lane bridge, which spans approximately 1.8 km, runs parallel to the existing Thane Creek Bridge and is expected to greatly relieve congestion, especially during peak travel hours. It will provide improved connectivity between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, benefiting daily commuters and transporters alike.

While civil work and road construction on the bridge had already been completed in April, several formalities including security clearances and ministerial scheduling are still in progress.

The new structure is expected to become a vital link for easing traffic bottlenecks along the Sion-Panvel highway. At present, over 1.3 lakh vehicles use the existing Thane Creek Bridge daily, often causing severe congestion. With TCB-3 in place, authorities anticipate a significant improvement in vehicular flow and commute times.

As Navi Mumbai continues to grow as a commercial and residential hub, seamless connectivity to Mumbai becomes critical. With the new bridge set to alleviate traffic on one of the busiest routes, its timely inauguration will mark a significant leap forward in regional mobility. The only missing piece now is the formal nod from central authorities to open this long-awaited public asset.
