The Nashik Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (NMRDA) has been entrusted with 13,645 hectares of government land across 190 villages in six talukas. This initiative aims to address the rapid urbanization in peri-urban and semi-urban areas, where local bodies often lack the resources for systematic development. NMRDA plans to create an integrated development plan, utilizing these lands for essential civic infrastructure such as sports grounds and water treatment plants. The authority is also in the process of formulating a land-use policy to ensure organized and community-centric development.
A substantial donation of 13,645 hectares of government land, which includes 190 villages spread across six talukas under its jurisdiction, was made to the Nashik Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (NMRDA) earlier this week. This move is part of a broader strategy to address the challenges posed by rapid urbanization in peri-urban and semi-urban areas, where local governing bodies often face financial constraints hindering systematic development.
A senior official from NMRDA indicated that the authority is in the process of identifying and assessing these land parcels to determine their current status, including any encroachments, and to plan their optimal use for public infrastructure. Given the vast spread of these areas and the current limited manpower at NMRDA, this task is expected to take some time.
The primary objective is to utilize these lands for the creation of essential civic infrastructure. Potential developments include sports grounds, water and sewage treatment plants, and other public services that are crucial for the well-being of the communities in these regions. By taking on this responsibility, NMRDA aims to ensure that development is carried out in a coordinated and efficient manner, addressing the needs of the growing population.
To facilitate organized development, NMRDA is formulating a comprehensive land-use policy. This policy will govern the allocation and utilization of these lands, including provisions for leasing, to prevent haphazard development and ensure that projects align with the broader goals of sustainable urban planning.
In line with these objectives, NMRDA has initiated development projects in the villages of Chandshi and Jalalpur, located in the peri-urban areas of Nashik city. The layouts for these areas have been finalized, and work is underway to lay drainage lines-an essential step in preparing the infrastructure for future developments, including road construction.
By focusing on integrated development and the creation of essential civic infrastructure, NMRDA aims to foster sustainable growth that meets the needs of the community. The formulation of a comprehensive land-use policy will further ensure that development is carried out in an organized manner, preventing haphazard growth and promoting long-term urban planning objectives.
