The Indian government has granted a Letter of Intent to SpaceX's satellite internet service, Starlink, to provide satellite communication services in the country, according to sources. The move follows the issuance of similar licences to Eutelsat OneWeb and Jio Satellite Communications. Starlink, which employs low earth orbit (LEO) satellites positioned 550 km above the earth, aims to deliver high-speed, low-latency broadband capable of supporting streaming, online gaming, and video calls. With over 7,000 LEO satellites currently operational and plans to expand the constellation to over 40,000, Starlink is poised to revolutionise satellite-based internet services worldwide.
The Indian government has issued a Letter of Intent to Starlink for satellite communication services, as reported by sources earlier this week. Starlink, developed by SpaceX, the American aerospace firm established in 2002 by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, provides high-speed broadband internet using satellite technology.
According to sources, the Department of Telecom (DoT) has granted the Letter of Intent to Starlink, marking a significant step towards the company's entry into the Indian satcom market. Previously, similar licences were granted to Eutelsat OneWeb and Jio Satellite Communications, indicating the government's increasing focus on expanding satellite internet infrastructure.
Unlike conventional satellite systems that rely on geostationary satellites positioned at higher altitudes, Starlink operates through a low earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellation positioned 550 km above the earth. This constellation, currently consisting of approximately 7,000 satellites, is anticipated to expand to over 40,000 in the coming years. The LEO network enables Starlink to deliver broadband internet with reduced latency, making it suitable for applications such as streaming, online gaming, and video conferencing.
With the government's recent approval, Starlink is now positioned to further its expansion plans in India, leveraging its satellite mesh network to bridge the digital divide, particularly in remote and underserved regions.
As Starlink advances its satellite constellation and further refines its LEO network, the entry of the SpaceX-backed service is expected to significantly impact India's digital landscape, potentially reshaping the future of internet connectivity in the region.
