Synopsis

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated a 5-km underground section of Kanpur Metro this week, with key works-including Kanpur Central Metro Station and 2.4 km of tunnelling-executed by Afcons Infrastructure Ltd under the KNPCC-06 package. The project included a 3.826-km underground corridor with three stations-Kanpur Central, Jhakarkatti, and Transport Nagar-constructed using shield Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs). Despite challenges from fragile structures, Afcons ensured timely and precise delivery. Previously, Afcons built the Priority Section (IIT Kanpur to Motijheel) featuring an elevated viaduct and nine stations. The firm is a leading player in India's metro construction sector, with notable achievements like Kolkata's underwater tunnel and Nagpur's double-decker viaduct. A flagship of the Shapoorji Pallonji Group, Afcons ranks among the top 140 international contractors. Its contributions continue to shape the future of India's urban transit infrastructure.

A major infrastructure milestone was reached earlier this week when Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi officially opened a 5-kilometer section of the underground Kanpur Metro. Of this newly unveiled segment, the Kanpur Central Metro Station and a 2.4-kilometre portion of the tunnelling were delivered by infrastructure giant Afcons Infrastructure Ltd.

The work is part of the KNPCC-06 package, awarded to an Afcons-led consortium in mid-March 2022. The scope of the package includes the design and construction of a 3.826-kilometre underground corridor encompassing three metro stations Kanpur Central, Jhakarkatti, and Transport Nagar as well as twin tunnels built using two shield Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) and other technologies.

The tunnelling operation along this corridor was particularly complex due to the presence of old and fragile structures. Nevertheless, Afcons managed to carry out the work with precision and safety, ensuring timely delivery of this critical urban transport segment.

Construction on the Kanpur Central Metro Station commenced in December 2022, while tunnelling between Kanpur Central and Nawabganj started in August 2023. Both undertakings have now reached completion.

Afcons has played a pivotal role in Kanpur Metro's progress since the early stages. Previously, the company was responsible for the Priority Section under package KNPCC-02, which included an elevated viaduct and nine elevated stations stretching from IIT Kanpur to Motijheel. Despite the unprecedented disruptions brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, Afcons delivered this section at record speed, with the line becoming operational for public use in mid-2021.

Known for its dominance in India's metro construction sector, Afcons has a footprint in more than 10 cities across the country. The firm's expertise includes delivering pathbreaking projects such as India's first underwater tunnel in Kolkata, the first four-layer transportation structure, a 5.6-kilometre double-decker viaduct for Nagpur Metro, and one of India's largest underground metro stations.

Afcons Infrastructure Ltd is the flagship engineering and construction entity of the Shapoorji Pallonji Group. With a history spanning over 60 years, the company boasts a strong portfolio of complex EPC projects both domestically and globally. As per the most recent ENR survey, Afcons ranks among the top 140 international contractors, holding the 12th position in bridge construction and 14th in marine and port infrastructure.

The successful completion of a challenging underground segment, amidst old structures and tight timelines, speaks volumes about the firm's execution prowess. With a legacy of record-breaking achievements across India and overseas, Afcons remains a key player shaping the future of Indian metro networks-one tunnel, one station at a time.
