Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated the first unit of the Ghatampur Thermal Power Project in Uttar Pradesh earlier this week. With an overall investment of INR 21,780.94 crore, this significant infrastructure initiative comprises three supercritical thermal units of 660 MW each, totalling an installed capacity of 1,980 MW. The project is spearheaded by Neyveli Uttar Pradesh Power Ltd (NUPPL), a joint venture between NLC India Ltd and Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd. The remaining two units are anticipated to become operational within the current financial year, bolstering the region's energy reliability.
Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated the first operational unit of the Ghatampur Thermal Power Project in Uttar Pradesh earlier this week. Developed at a total investment of INR 21,780.94 crore, the project was officially announced by the Ministry of Coal.
The ambitious project consists of three supercritical thermal power units, each with a generation capacity of 660 MW, thereby contributing a cumulative 1,980 MW to the national grid. Officials from the coal ministry confirmed that the remaining two units are expected to be commissioned within the ongoing financial year, marking a crucial phase in the country's push for enhanced power infrastructure.
The Ghatampur Thermal Power Project is a flagship endeavour of Neyveli Uttar Pradesh Power Ltd (NUPPL), which is a joint venture between central public sector enterprise NLC India Ltd and the state-run Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd (UPRVUNL).
The coal ministry noted that the Prime Minister's inauguration of the power plant was seen as a transformative moment for the energy sector. They stated that the plant's state-of-the-art design, advanced emission control systems, and secured coal supply are expected to ensure affordable and reliable electricity for years to come.
They also added that the ministry remained dedicated to supporting such strategic initiatives, underscoring the government's vision for a self-reliant, energy-secure, and environmentally sustainable future for India.
This development follows a long series of government-backed efforts to augment India's power capacity and reduce reliance on energy imports. The supercritical technology used in this project is aligned with global standards for efficiency and emission reduction, making it a benchmark for future projects.
It reflects not only the government's strategic intent to strengthen power infrastructure but also its focus on cleaner, more efficient thermal technology. As the remaining units near completion, the project is set to have a lasting impact on power supply in Uttar Pradesh and neighbouring states, reinforcing the broader goals of self-sufficiency and environmental stewardship in India's energy policy.
