The Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) has identified 176 buildings as highly unsafe and urged residents to vacate them before the monsoon. The civic body, supported by police intervention if needed, aims to prevent casualties caused by structural collapses. Deputy Commissioner Awdhoot Tawade advised residents in both listed and unlisted buildings to conduct structural audits or relocate if they suspect risk. The crisis stems from illegal constructions, poor enforcement, and unresolved tenant-owner disputes. By issuing this list, KDMC aims to prevent further tragedies through early action, urging residents to take personal responsibility for their safety.
The Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) has identified 176 structures as critically unsafe and structurally unsound. These buildings, now officially listed on the KDMC website, have raised grave concerns ahead of the impending monsoon. In response, the civic body has urged all occupants to promptly vacate the premises and relocate to safer environments to avoid potential casualties. Deputy Municipal Commissioner Awdhoot Tawade highlighted the urgency of this situation by stating that the corporation has formally sought police assistance to evacuate residents from these hazardous structures.
Tawade also encouraged individuals living in buildings not currently marked as dangerous to conduct structural audits if they suspect any risk. If audits seem unfeasible, residents should leave voluntarily to protect their lives during the rainy season. Over the years, Kalyan-Dombivli has witnessed multiple tragedies involving building collapses during monsoon months, frequently resulting in fatalities. These incidents have compelled KDMC to annually identify and publish a list of dilapidated buildings as a preventive measure.
In many instances, civic authorities have had to rely on police support to carry out evacuations when residents were unwilling to move. The root of this recurring crisis lies in unchecked illegal constructions and the insufficient enforcement of building regulations. The problem further escalates due to the absence of routine structural assessments, unresolved legal disputes between tenants and landlords, and lack of coordination among stakeholders. These challenges collectively hinder the timely execution of safety measures by the municipal body.
Each year, KDMC takes a proactive stance to reduce monsoon-related casualties, but the effectiveness of these efforts relies greatly on the public's willingness to cooperate. To avoid another season of loss and damage, it is necessary to take collective action, evacuate quickly, conduct structural reviews, and seek legal resolution. Only through shared responsibility and timely intervention can the city safeguard lives and prevent avoidable tragedies.
