The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has approved a revised draft development plan (DP), covering all areas under its jurisdiction for the first time. Spanning 173.24 sq. km, the plan outlines urban growth strategies through 2041, addressing infrastructure needs amid rapid population growth-from 17 lakh in 2011 to a projected 61 lakh by 2041. Key features include wider roads, EV charging points, metro parking zones, transport hubs, and green spaces. It also integrates areas from the former PCNTDA and uses GIS-based planning. Citizens can submit feedback within 60 days, after which a review committee will evaluate suggestions before the plan is submitted for state approval.
The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has officially approved the revised draft development plan (DP), marking a significant milestone for the city. For the first time, the DP includes all areas under PCMC jurisdiction, incorporating zones merged after the city's formation. Spanning 173.24 square kilometres, this comprehensive plan outlines the developmental roadmap for the next two decades, with 2021 as the base year.
Approved by PCMC commissioner and administrator Shekhar Singh during a standing committee meeting, the draft DP has been designed to address the city's rapid urban expansion and infrastructure needs. It will be available for public viewing both online and at the municipal headquarters, ensuring transparency and community involvement.
The city's population, which stood at 17 lakh in the 2011 census, is projected to increase to 42.4 lakh by 2031 and 61 lakh by 2041. In response, the revised DP focuses on upgrading and expanding essential services and facilities. Key infrastructural changes include new roads with a minimum width of 18 meters and roads in heavily populated areas being at least 12 meters wide. The plan also reserves land for electric vehicle (EV) charging points, Pune Metro parking zones, and other vital urban facilities.
Provisions have been made for two designated halting points for Wari processions. Other proposed developments include a truck terminus, an intercity bus terminal, a multimodal transport hub, and a sports complex. These additions are aimed at enhancing connectivity, mobility, and recreational infrastructure in the city.
The revised DP also integrates the areas formerly managed by the Pimpri Chinchwad New Town Development Authority (PCNTDA), which was merged with PCMC in 2021. The initial intent to revise the DP was announced in 2019. To develop the new plan, a private firm from Ahmedabad was commissioned, utilizing Geographic Information System (GIS) technology for precision and efficiency.
The existing DP, extended due to delays caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and elections, is set to expire on May 18. The newly drafted plan ensures continuity in development and strategic planning.
The draft prioritizes fundamental infrastructure such as roads, drainage systems, water supply, and public green spaces. Special attention has been given to the newly merged regions, where significant growth has been observed in recent years. These areas will receive focused infrastructural enhancements to support their ongoing development.
Public participation is encouraged, with a 60-day window for citizens to provide feedback. A seven-member review committee, comprising three members from the standing committee and four independent experts, will evaluate suggestions and conduct hearings. After reviewing inputs, the committee will submit a report to the planning authority, following which the revised DP will be forwarded to the state government for final approval.
