GMR Airports Ltd (GAL) has assumed full control of cargo operations at Delhi airport after the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) withdrew security clearance from Turkish firm Celebi, citing national security concerns. Celebi had been responsible for ground handling and cargo terminal management through its two subsidiaries. This transition ensures seamless continuation of cargo services under GAL's management, through its subsidiary Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL). The move reflects growing government oversight in airport security and operations, reinforcing GAL's position as a key operator at Delhi airport.
GMR Airports Ltd (GAL) took over the cargo operations at Delhi airport, shortly after the airport ended its association with the Turkish company Celebi. This followed the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security's (BCAS) decision to revoke the security clearance for Celebi Airport Services India Pvt Ltd, citing concerns related to national security.
Until recently, Celebi Airport Services India Pvt Ltd and Celebi Delhi Cargo Terminal Management India Pvt Ltd were responsible for the ground handling and cargo terminal management functions, respectively. However, following a government directive that revoked Celebi's security clearance, GMR Airports Ltd has assumed full responsibility for managing and operating all cargo-related functions at Delhi airport.
Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), a subsidiary of GAL, announced through a statement that it had taken over these operations to ensure seamless business continuity and uphold stringent security standards. This development highlights the increasing emphasis on security protocols at India's major airports and signals a significant shift in the management of critical cargo infrastructure at Delhi airport.
GMR Airports Ltd has been a major player in India's airport sector for several years, operating multiple airports across the country. Its takeover of cargo operations at the nation's busiest airport further consolidates its role in managing key aviation infrastructure, reflecting a strategic move aligned with both security priorities and operational efficiency.
By centralising these functions under a domestically controlled operator, the government is reinforcing its commitment to safeguarding critical airport operations amid increasing geopolitical complexities. This transition not only strengthens security but also ensures that cargo handling remains efficient and uninterrupted, positioning GAL as a central figure in the future growth and resilience of Delhi airport's operations. Such shifts underscore a broader trend of enhanced oversight and strategic control in India's aviation infrastructure management.
