Synopsis

In a bold move to boost IT investments, the Andhra Pradesh government has allotted 21.16 acres of land in Visakhapatnam to Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) at a token cost of 99 paise. The INR 1,370 crore project is expected to create over 12,000 jobs, with TCS set to build a large-scale development centre including innovation labs and skilling hubs. The symbolic pricing signals the state's aggressive push to position Vizag as a major tech hub. With upcoming infrastructure like the Bhogapuram airport and metro, this allotment marks a renewed effort to attract top-tier IT firms and put Andhra on India's digital map.

The Andhra Pradesh government has allotted 21.16 acres of land to Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) in Visakhapatnam at a token cost of just 99 paise. The land will be used to set up a state-of-the-art development centre, with the project expected to generate over 12,000 jobs, according to officials close to the development.

The decision was cleared by the Andhra Pradesh Cabinet following months of discussions with TCS that began in October 2024, when IT Minister Nara Lokesh visited Tata Sons- headquarters and made a formal investment pitch. Sources familiar with the talks said that the symbolic pricing is meant to showcase Andhra's investor-friendly approach and encourage other IT majors to consider the state as a serious destination for digital infrastructure development.

Similar government-led incentives have previously played a key role in IT park developments in places like Electronics City in Bengaluru, Gachibowli in Hyderabad, and Hinjewadi in Pune, all of which were catalyzed by government land allocations or SEZ incentives in their early days.

TCS is reportedly investing INR 1,370 crore in this new Vizag campus, which will be one of its largest in southern India. Apart from office towers, the facility is expected to include training centres, innovation labs, and skilling hubs to prepare young graduates from the state for global tech careers. The development aligns with Andhra Pradesh's long-term vision of making Visakhapatnam (Vizag) the IT capital of the state.

Minister Lokesh has been vocal about Andhra Pradesh's strategy to become a leading digital economy hub by 2030. The recent allotment follows a pattern of proactive engagement by the government to create tech-ready infrastructure-something it had previously attempted with projects like Fintech Valley Vizag, although those initiatives saw mixed outcomes due to lack of sustained momentum.

Officials say this allotment to TCS marks a revival of that tech ambition, but this time with more follow-through and clear job creation targets. With Vizag emerging as the executive capital, infrastructure works like the upcoming Bhogapuram airport, metro rail, and new data centre corridors are expected to further boost the region's appeal.

Andhra Pradesh's offer of land to TCS for just 99 paise may seem symbolic, but the economic impact could be massive. As India's Tier-2 cities compete for tech capital, such bold government-industry collaborations are what can put Vizag in the same league as Hyderabad and Bengaluru.
