MMRDA has launched trial runs on a 5.3-km stretch of Mumbai Metro Line 2B from Mandale to Diamond Garden, covering five stations. This segment is part of the larger 18.5-km corridor connecting DN Nagar to Mandale. The Mandale depot panning 31 acres and built to house 72 trains's is now operational. After internal trials, RDSO and the Independent Safety Assessor will evaluate system readiness. While the full line's launch has been pushed to early 2026, the corridor is expected to significantly ease east-west travel, boost real estate in Kurla and Chembur, and improve overall public transport integration across the city.
Mumbai's eastern suburbs are all set to witness the beginning of trial runs on the Metro 2B corridor, a key part of the city's east-west metro network. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) will begin dynamic testing on a 5.3-km stretch of the 18.5-km Metro 2B route between DN Nagar and Mankhurd, starting Wednesday. The initial trial will cover five stations Mandale, Mankhurd, BSNL, Shivaji Chowk, and Diamond Garden as the city gears up to open this crucial metro line to the public.
The 2B corridor, which will eventually run from DN Nagar in the western suburbs to Mandale in the east, has faced repeated delays but is now gaining momentum. A key part of this trial section includes the Mandale depot, a double-deck structure built over 31 acres, with capacity to house up to 72 metro trains. Officials involved in the testing process shared that a wide range of system checks will be conducted including braking, acceleration, energy usage, telecommunications, system integration, and more.
Once these preliminary trials are complete, the Indian Railways Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) will step in to evaluate the safety and performance of the system. If the results are positive, the next step would be certification by the Independent Safety Assessor (ISA) a necessary requirement before the metro can begin passenger operations.
Although the MMRDA initially planned to open the entire stretch by December 2025, the launch of the Diamond Garden to DN Nagar portion has now been pushed to early 2026. This is part of a larger plan to ease congestion and improve connectivity between Mumbai's key residential and commercial zones. The Mumbai Metro Line 2, which includes both 2A (Dahisar to DN Nagar) and 2B, will significantly reduce road traffic. The 2A stretch (23.64 km) is already operational and has received positive response from daily commuters.
According to city planners and transit experts, the Metro 2B line will be a game-changer for commuters travelling between the western and eastern suburbs, particularly for those who currently rely on crowded roadways or the Central Railway line. With the metro promising faster travel times and reduced carbon emissions, the corridor is also expected to uplift surrounding real estate markets, especially in Chembur, Kurla, and Bandra East, where property values are closely linked to metro connectivity.
The revival of trials marks a key milestone for MMRDA after multiple delays due to land acquisition hurdles, funding issues, and pandemic-related slowdowns. Now, with depot construction and electrification completed, the agency is focusing on meeting technical and safety milestones.
