Foxconn and the Uttar Pradesh government have entered early-stage talks for setting up a new electronics manufacturing facility, with the state offering 300 acres in the YEIDA zone. This follows the finalisation of a INR 3,706 crore investment by Vama Sundari, Foxconn's chipmaking JV with HCL, in a 48-acre OSAT unit in Sector 28. The move aligns with India's expanding electronics ecosystem, as mobile exports hit INR 2 lakh crore in FY25. With existing players like Samsung and Dixon already in UP, a new Foxconn project could further establish the state as India's top electronics manufacturing hub, backed by policy support and infrastructure.
The Uttar Pradesh government and iPhone-maker Foxconn have initiated early-stage discussions to establish a new electronics manufacturing unit in the state, according to sources familiar with the matter. The engagement comes close on the heels of the final land allocation for Vama Sundari, a chipmaking joint venture between Foxconn and HCL, at the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) zone.
Officials said that Invest UP, the state's investment promotion agency, made the pitch to Foxconn, highlighting the availability of 300 acres of land under YEIDA for potential expansion. A source stated that the state government has offered the land to Foxconn as part of its efforts to attract high-tech electronics manufacturing. The source added that discussions are still at an early stage, and there is no confirmation yet on the specific products the Taiwanese firm might manufacture.
Foxconn, already the largest iPhone assembler in India, has yet to comment on the development. The state government also did not respond to media queries on the matter.
Separately, 48 acres have already been allocated to Foxconn's Vama Sundari joint venture with HCL in Sector 28 of YEIDA, where a INR 3,706-crore investment will go toward setting up an OSAT (Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test) facility. The project is expected to generate around 4,000 jobs in the initial phase.
The move aligns with India's rapidly growing electronics manufacturing ecosystem. According to the India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA), mobile phone exports reached an all-time high of INR 2 lakh crore in FY25, a 55% increase over the INR 1.29 lakh crore recorded the previous year. Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently announced that Apple's iPhone accounted for INR 1.5 lakh crore worth of exports alone in this segment.
Uttar Pradesh has already established itself as a key hub for mobile phone production, hosting manufacturers such as Samsung, Vivo, Oppo, Dixon, and Lava. Collectively, companies based in the state account for over 80% of India's smartphone market share. ICEA estimates that India's total mobile phone production has grown to INR 5.25 lakh crore in FY25, up from INR 4.22 lakh crore in FY24.
If the Foxconn project materialises, it could further cement UP's role as a national electronics manufacturing powerhouse, driven by infrastructure readiness and strong policy backing.
