The much-awaited Pune Metro line between Hinjewadi and Shivajinagar will not begin operations in 2024 as earlier expected. The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) confirmed that only 85% of the project is complete and trial runs may begin by December, pushing the passenger launch to 2026. Developed under a public-private partnership, the line is seen as a major boost for tech professionals commuting between the IT hub and city centre.
The long-awaited Pune Metro line connecting Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar will not begin operations this year as expected. The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has confirmed that the launch will be delayed, with actual operations likely to commence only in 2026. Originally scheduled to begin in April this year, the service was given an extension till September, but now even that target seems unlikely.
The Pune IT City Metro Rail Ltd (PITCMRL) is executing the project on behalf of PMRDA. A senior official from the authority confirmed that while 85% of the metro construction is complete, the remaining tasks-particularly minimum infrastructure required for trial runs-will only be ready by December-end. Trial runs and inspections are expected to begin after that and will take a few more months before passenger services can be launched.
This line, seen as a key connector between Pune's IT hub in Hinjewadi and the heart of the city at Shivajinagar, is part of the public-private partnership (PPP) model and is expected to significantly reduce traffic on one of the busiest stretches in Pune. Once operational, the line is expected to reduce travel time drastically and ease road congestion, especially for tech professionals commuting daily from city centres to the IT corridor.
The project has been eagerly anticipated by citizens and developers alike, with several new residential and commercial projects already launched along the metro route in expectation of rising connectivity. The delay, however, is expected to impact near-term housing demand and leasing activity in the corridor.
Despite setbacks, officials remain optimistic that trial runs will begin once the safety infrastructure is fully in place. The delay is partly attributed to the time needed for testing, clearances, and safety audits, which are critical for passenger operations.
