A new direct flight route between Newark/New York and Faro, set to begin shortly, is drawing US real estate buyers to Portugal Algarve region, often dubbed the ;Hamptons of Portugal. United Airlines expansion includes three weekly flights from the US to Faro, unlocking easier access to the luxurious lifestyle on offer in Algarve resorts like Vale do Lobo. High-end villas, private pools, proximity to beaches, and wellness facilities are enticing buyers seeking serenity, elegance, and nature, all wrapped in Portugals relaxed charm. With price points comparable to the Hamptons, the Algarve is gaining traction as a second-home hotspot for affluent Americans.
A new wave of interest in the Algarve's luxury real estate market is taking shape, thanks to United Airlines upcoming direct flight route between Newark/New York and Faro. Set to commence shortly as part of the airline's international expansion, the service will operate three times a week, marking the first-ever direct air link between the United States and Portugal's southern Algarve region.
While United already connects the US with Lisbon via Newark and Washington/Dulles, this new route opens up fresh prospects for American buyers eyeing sun-soaked, upscale alternatives to traditional domestic getaways like the Hamptons.
According to Alda Filipe, Regional Director and Partner at Kronos Homes, this new accessibility is shifting attention toward the Algarve. She noted that the region offers a similar sense of elegance, calm, and luxury as the Hamptons, yet is infused with the authentic, laid-back rhythm of Portuguese life. She pointed out that the Algarve's expansive coastline, wooden boardwalks leading to the Atlantic, and high-end facilities mirror the Hamptons' exclusive appeal.
Indeed, despite being nearly 5,800 miles apart, the Algarve and the Hamptons share more than just scenic beauty they both boast spacious, high-end homes designed for privacy and tranquillity.
As of this past month, Realtor.com listed the median home price in the Hamptons at USD 2.79 million. Meanwhile, in Algarve's prestigious Vale do Lobo resort, a four-bedroom villa within walking distance of the beach is currently priced at EUR 2,695,000 (approximately USD 2.9 million). This luxury property offers a secluded south-facing garden, a covered outdoor lounge, a private swimming pool and Jacuzzi, and a generous terrace opening into a bright open-plan living area ideal for sun-drenched relaxation.
The Algarve also matches the Hamptons in natural allure. Alongside its famous beaches and striking red, orange, and gold cliffs, the region features picturesque mountains and lush nature reserves filled with birdlife and saltwater lagoons.
On the lifestyle front, buyers in Vale do Lobo enjoy convenient access to world-class amenities. The community includes a Royal Spa, two championship 18-hole golf courses, tennis and padel courts, and upscale dining venues. One such highlight is Tinto, a restaurant known for its deep dive into Portuguese culinary traditions, offering visitors a gourmet experience wrapped in regional heritage.
Felipe explained that many American visitors are drawn to this mix of authenticity and high-quality living. She shared that this blend not only leaves a lasting impression on tourists but also frequently motivates them to invest in holiday homes to deepen their connection with the Algarve.
Vale do Lobo, with its sophisticated offerings, natural beauty, and world-class amenities, stands ready to capitalise on this momentum, presenting itself as more than just a resort it's a lifestyle destination reshaping global luxury real estate preferences.
