The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has initiated a Smart House Numbering System (SHNS) to assign unique GIS-based number plates to over 300,000 properties. This initiative aims to enhance transparency and efficiency in taxation, infrastructure planning, and municipal services. The project, conducted by Geovista Technologies Private Limited, has completed surveys in 27 out of 60 wards, with plans to finish the remainder by year-end. The new system will not alter existing house numbers but will supplement them with digital identifiers to streamline various municipal processes.
In a significant move towards modernizing urban governance, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has embarked on an ambitious project to assign unique GIS-based number plates to over 300,000 properties across the city. This initiative, part of the Smart House Numbering System (SHNS) launched last year, is designed to enhance transparency and efficiency in taxation, infrastructure planning, and municipal services such as waste management and emergency response.
GMC Mayor Mrigen Sarania announced that the door-to-door geographical information system (GIS) survey, conducted by Geovista Technologies Private Limited, has been completed in 27 of the city's 60 wards. The remaining areas are scheduled for completion by the end of the year. He emphasized that while existing house numbers will remain unchanged, the new GIS-based number plates will be issued to streamline various municipal processes.
The installation of these plates is set to commence this month, and residents are urged to cooperate with the process. The GMC has confirmed that this system will ensure accurate taxation by providing a reliable property assessment process, thereby improving the overall efficiency of municipal services.
This initiative aligns with broader efforts in Assam to digitize and streamline municipal operations. For instance, Dibrugarh has recently undertaken a similar project to install digital ID systems at over 24,000 properties, aiming to modernize property identification and tax collection processes.
Guwahati's implementation of the Smart House Numbering System marks a pivotal step towards embracing digital solutions for urban management. This move not only reflects a commitment to modernization but also sets a precedent for other cities in the region to adopt similar initiatives, fostering a more efficient and transparent urban administration.
