The INR 1,070 crore Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Memorial at Indu Mill, Dadar, is progressing steadily with over 52% of the pedestal structure completed. The 350-ft bronze statue, designed by renowned sculptor Ram Sutar, has reached 20% completion. Ancillary buildings, including a museum, lecture hall, and library, are also nearing completion. The MMRDA aims to finish the project by 2026. In parallel, the Ambedkar Knowledge Centre in Kalyan-India's only digital hub on Ambedkar-has launched its second phase with interactive displays and 3D holograms, enhancing public engagement. Together, these initiatives mark Mumbai's monumental tribute to the architect of India's Constitution.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is fast-tracking the construction of the grand Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Memorial at Indu Mill in Dadar, aiming to complete the INR 1,070-crore project by 2026. Spread over 4.84 hectares, the memorial will feature a towering statue, lecture halls, a museum, a library, and other key facilities, with several components now nearing completion.
The memorial, dedicated to Dr Ambedkar-chief architect of the Indian Constitution-will also include a 350-ft tall bronze statue, being sculpted by 100-year-old artist Ram Sutar, known for his work on the Statue of Unity. The thermocol model of the statue has already been completed. As of now, 52.8% of the pedestal building is ready, while the statue work stands at 20% completion. MMRDA has procured over 1,395 metric tonnes of steel for the statue and completed fabrication of 155 MT of the baseplate.
Work on the entire site is progressing at a steady pace. The entrance plaza is 88.5% done, the lecture hall is 78.7% ready, and the library has reached 81.1% completion. The museum and auditorium block is 68% complete and is targeted for completion by August 31, 2025. Overall, the ancillary buildings have reached 56% completion. Bronze panel work has also begun, with 308 sq m out of a total 10,510 sq m finished so far.
Senior MMRDA officials, including Commissioner Sanjay Mukherjee and Additional Commissioner Vikram Kumar, recently reviewed the site to assess the progress.
On the occasion of Dr Ambedkar's birth anniversary, another important milestone was marked with the inauguration of the Ambedkar Knowledge Centre in Kalyan. Built by the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation, this centre features digital displays, holograms, and a library to help visitors learn more about Dr Ambedkar's life and work. The centre will allow people to access books, e-books, and rare literature.
This is India's only digital knowledge hub dedicated to Dr Ambedkar and is being developed in two phases. The first phase, which included a 12-ft statue of Ambedkar on an 8-ft pedestal, was opened last year. The centre now also features a 3D holography setup and interactive digital screens for deeper engagement.
With major infrastructure works nearing completion, Mumbai's tribute to Dr Ambedkar is on track to be a landmark project, blending monumental architecture with digital learning spaces.
