The National Highways for Electric Vehicles (NHEV), an initiative supported by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, has acquired 4.7 acres of land in Tirunelveli to establish a 3G EV charging station. This project falls under the broader 5,500 km national rollout of NHEV's charging network and marks the first station under the South Zone rollout and second along the Kanyakumari-Madurai corridor. The site, pledged by Maaya Autobahn, will be developed as a key logistics and truck charging hub, strategically aligned with ports and freight corridors nearby.
The National Highways for Electric Vehicles (NHEV), a government-backed pilot initiative under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, has acquired 4.7 acres of land in Tirunelveli to set up a 3G electric vehicle (EV) charging station. The land acquisition supports the broader 5,500 km rollout of the NHEV 3G charging network, which was launched following recommendations made by the Estimate Committee of the 17th Lok Sabha in Parliament last year.
Strategically located on the Kanyakumari-Madurai Highway corridor, the newly acquired land becomes the second 3G EV charging station on this stretch and the first under the South Zone rollout of the NHEV project.
According to a company statement issued earlier this week, NHEV Project Director Abhijeet Sinha explained that several sites have already been shortlisted in the southern states following the third technical trial run of electric and LNG trucks, buses, and other vehicles along the Chennai-Trichy route. He stated that the response from both individuals and private companies to pledge land for the 3G stations had been overwhelmingly positive, and final assessments of these applications were now complete.
This upcoming charging station in Tirunelveli is expected to be NHEV's fifth freight corridor project, following the successful Chennai-Trichy TechTrial Run III that was conducted in collaboration with Ashok Leyland's electric trucks and Blue Energy Motors' LNG trucks in late 2024.
R Harish Babu, Managing Director of Maaya Autobahn, which pledged the Tirunelveli site on lease to NHEV, conveyed that the land is now open to NHEV partners for construction-related site surveys, soil assessments, and project cost estimation.
With proximity to key ports and dedicated freight corridors, NHEV aims to transform the Tirunelveli site into a significant logistics and truck charging hub. This development is also in line with the strategy to expand five freight corridors in Tamil Nadu, following the successful technical trials involving heavy-duty EV and LNG vehicles.
With increasing private sector interest and favourable response to land pledging, the groundwork is being laid for a scalable, future-ready EV network that may redefine freight mobility standards across the nation.
