The Maharashtra government is set to launch the 'Mumbai 1' unified travel card, enabling seamless access to Metro, Monorail, suburban trains, and buses across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Chief Minister Shri Devendra Fadnavis and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the system backend will be ready within a month. Vaishnaw highlighted ongoing railway projects in the state worth INR 1.73 lakh crore, including 238 new AC trains for Mumbai. Additionally, the Gondia-Ballarshah rail line received INR 4,019 crore in funding to improve Vidarbha's connectivity. The state also unveiled the Shivaji Maharaj Circuit Train to promote heritage tourism, aligning mobility upgrades with cultural preservation.
The Maharashtra government is preparing to roll out a unified travel card named 'Mumbai 1' that will allow commuters to access all forms of public transportation in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), including the Metro, Mono Rail, suburban railway services, and city buses.
This announcement was made earlier this week by Maharashtra Chief Minister Shri Devendra Fadnavis during a joint press interaction with Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. The CM mentioned that the card's underlying system architecture would be ready within a month, paving the way for its official rollout soon after.
Railway Minister Vaishnaw, while highlighting the Centre's commitment to boosting the state's transport infrastructure, noted that railway projects worth INR 1,73,804 crore are currently in progress across Maharashtra. Additionally, new railway works valued at INR 23,778 crore have been sanctioned for the year, reinforcing the state's importance in national infrastructure planning.
Mumbai's suburban railway network is also set for a major overhaul, with the Centre approving 238 new air-conditioned trains, whose production is expected to begin shortly. These additions are poised to enhance the commuter experience significantly in one of India's busiest rail corridors.
Further elaborating on the state's infrastructure pipeline, Vaishnaw mentioned that projects worth INR 17,000 crore are ongoing in Mumbai alone, and these would collectively transform the city's railway system over the coming years.
The Gondia-Ballarshah railway line project in eastern Maharashtra has also received a green signal. According to CM Fadnavis, this new route will boost regional connectivity between Vidarbha and the neighbouring states of Chhattisgarh and Telangana. The Union government is contributing INR 4,019 crore towards this vital project.
On the tourism front, the Chief Minister also announced the launch of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Circuit Train Line, which will offer heritage rides through regions that house historic forts from the Maratha Empire era. The initiative is aimed at promoting cultural tourism by connecting people to Maharashtra's storied past.
Massive financial allocations and a clear roadmap point to a broader push for convenience, capacity, and commuter-centric innovation. As projects like the Shivaji heritage train line and the Gondia-Ballarshah route gain traction, Maharashtra is placing both mobility and culture at the heart of its infrastructure development vision.
