On June 22, the esteemed Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao graced the momentous occasion as the grand inauguration of the impressive 2BHK dignity housing colony in Kollur took place. Sprawling across 145 acres, the project encompasses 117 blocks, comprising a staggering 15,660 dwelling units. Each meticulously crafted flat boasts a spacious built-up area of 560 square feet and a comfortable carpet area of 398 square feet. With a total project cost of Rs 1,489 crore, each unit has been crafted at an expense of Rs 8.65 lakh, including a generous contribution of Rs 1.5 lakh from the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana.
In addition to the housing units, the 2BHK colony features a host of essential civil infrastructure. This includes an extensive 13.5-kilometre VDCC road network, a state-of-the-art underground drainage system spanning 10.6 kilometres, and nine MLD-capacity sewerage treatment plants. Furthermore, a well-structured drinking water pipeline network measuring 10.05 km has been implemented, complemented by three shopping complexes housing 118 shops. To ensure the maintenance and upkeep of the housing colony, Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD) Minister KT Rama Rao has proposed utilizing the rental income generated from these shops. This revenue will be dedicated to lift maintenance, sanitation, and the provision of various amenities for the residents.
Looking ahead, officials have allocated space for future developments within the colony. These include sprawling parks adorned with dedicated cycling and walking tracks, vibrant playgrounds, state-of-the-art open-air gyms, an impressive indoor sports complex, a captivating amphitheatre, schools, a bustling bus terminal, police and fire stations, banks, and basthi dawakhanas.
The Telangana government's dignity housing scheme has witnessed an overwhelming response, with a staggering 7.09 lakh applications received against the state's promise of providing one lakh 2BHK houses to the underprivileged. Notably, the highest number of applications, totalling 1.29 lakh, were received from Kukatpally, which houses a significant portion of the slum-dwelling population, while 1.03 lakh applications were from areas outside GHMC limits, excluding 12,568 from the Secunderabad Cantonment Board area.
The Kollur 2BHK initiative achieved national recognition and was honoured with the prestigious Housing and Urban Development Corporation Limited (HUDCO) award for exemplary practices in the realms of Housing, Urban Poverty, and Infrastructure.
The Telangana State Housing Corporation Ltd., established on June 2, 2014, operates independently to fulfil the government's vision of providing permanent residences to eligible BPL households. In October 2015, the innovative double-bedroom housing scheme was launched, aiming to bestow 100% subsidized housing to the impoverished without requiring any contribution from the beneficiaries. This extraordinary scheme, unique in the country, alleviates rural communities from the shackles of debt, considering their reliance on seasonal earnings. It signifies a paradigm shift, offering a fully subsidized approach that not only provides a secure economic asset but also fosters hygienic living environments, contributing significantly to the socio-economic progress of individuals and communities.
