Synopsis

Earlier this week, Vizhinjam International Seaport in Kerala welcomed MSC Turkiye, one of the world's largest and most fuel-efficient container ships, marking a significant milestone in India's maritime history. This docking is not only the vessel's first in India but also the first ever in South Asia. Operated under the flag of Liberia, the 399.9-metre-long ship with a capacity of 24,346 TEUs was received with a ceremonial water salute. With the inclusion of Vizhinjam in MSC's flagship Jade service, the port's strategic relevance in the Asia-Europe trade corridor continues to strengthen.

In a landmark development for India's maritime sector, Vizhinjam International Seaport welcomed MSC Turkiye billed as one of the world's largest and most fuel-efficient container ships earlier this week. This event marked the vessel's maiden docking in India and the broader South Asian region, reinforcing Vizhinjam's rising importance in global shipping networks.

Kerala's Minister for Ports, VN Vasavan, noted that the arrival of MSC Turkiye was a significant chapter in India's port history. The giant vessel, currently sailing under the Liberian flag, stretches 399.9 metres in length, with a width of 61.3 metres and a depth of 33.5 metres. It has a carrying capacity of around 24,346 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), making it one of the biggest container ships globally. Upon arrival, the vessel was honoured with a water salute at the port.

Vizhinjam Port, which began commercial operations in December last year after a four-month trial phase, has rapidly built a presence in the international shipping landscape. Port authorities reported that over the past month alone, the seaport handled 51 vessels and moved 1,08,770 TEUs, its highest monthly throughput so far.

Just a few weeks ago, the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) included Vizhinjam as part of its prestigious Jade service, a vital shipping route that connects Asia and Europe. The first mothership under this route, MSC MIA, had already docked at the port during the past month. The Jade service's addition has firmly integrated Vizhinjam into one of the world's busiest maritime corridors.

The arrival of MSC Turkiye strengthens Vizhinjam's role as a strategic transshipment hub. The port is expected to boost maritime connectivity, cargo movement, and regional economic growth. Developed at an investment of INR 7,600 crore, Vizhinjam is being executed by Adani Ports and SEZ Pvt Ltd under a Design, Build, Finance, Operate, and Transfer (DBFOT) model. It is India's first deepwater international transshipment port, naturally endowed with over 18 metres of depth, scalable up to 20 metres, making it ideal for accommodating Ultra Large Container Vessels (ULCVs).

The development underscores India's growing capability in handling high-volume maritime trade and strengthens the case for further investment in coastal infrastructure, trade logistics, and port-led development initiatives in the region.
