Following public outcry over the narrowing and lowering of Walkeshwar Road in Malabar Hill, the BMC has issued a stop-work notice to developer Dilip Chunilal Chandan and architect Preeti Kashyap Barai. The April 26, 2025 notice cites unauthorized construction at a site on CS 156, which reportedly lacks proper approvals as per amended building plans. The BMC has halted all work until the City-I Building Proposal Department reviews concerns about the altered road level and reduced width. The developer has been given 24 hours to present valid permissions or face demolition and removal of materials. Local police have been instructed to enforce the order immediately.
Growing public concern over the narrowing and lowering of Walkeshwar Road in Malabar Hill has prompted swift intervention by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). In response to long-standing complaints raised by residents, BMC's D Ward issued a stop-work notice to a developer undertaking construction along the contested stretch of the road, first highlighted by Mumbai Mirror on December 15, 2024. The notice, dated April 26, 2025, was addressed to architect Preeti Kashyap Barai and developer Dilip Chunilal Chandan.
It cited unauthorized construction activities on a property located on CS 156 in the Malabar Hill division. The Assistant Engineer (Building Proposal) stated in the April 25 letter that the project lacked the required endorsement on the commencement certificate, as per the latest amended building plans. The authorities directed an immediate halt to any construction activity until further clarification is received from the City-I Building Proposal Department regarding concerns about the altered road level and reduced width of Walkeshwar Road.
The notice also instructed the developer and architect to present valid permissions issued by the competent authority within 24 hours. Failure to comply, the letter warned, would result in demolition of unauthorized structures and the removal of construction materials, machinery, and equipment from the site. BMC further directed local law enforcement to enforce the order without delay. Efforts to contact the developer yielded no response, while architect Barai declined to offer any statement on the matter.
