Synopsis

Hubballi is undergoing rapid infrastructure development in 2025, led by a INR 273 crore expansion of its airport to accommodate 2,400 peak-hour passengers, with completion set for 2026. The airport also operates on an 8 MW solar power plant, supplying surplus energy to other Karnataka airports. Under the Smart Cities Mission, projects like the Tolankere Lake revival, Mahatma Gandhi Park upgrade, and Savari bike-sharing system have improved urban livability. The city earned the SKOCH Silver Award for municipal governance. Additionally, the revised Hubballi-Ankola rail project will boost coastal connectivity, reinforcing Hubballi's emergence as a key urban and industrial hub in Karnataka.

Hubballi, a prominent city in Karnataka, is undergoing the expansion of Hubballi Airport. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has approved a INR 273 crore project to construct a new terminal building, increasing the airport's capacity to handle 2,400 peak-hour passengers. The new terminal will span 20,000 square meters and include four aerobridges and an expanded apron to accommodate six narrow-body aircraft. Harsh Constructions Pvt. Ltd. secured the contract with a bid of INR 220.13 crore, and construction commenced in early 2024, with completion expected by the end of 2026.

In addition to the terminal expansion, Hubballi Airport has achieved self-reliance in electricity generation with the commissioning of an 8 MW ground-mounted solar power plant in April 2021. This initiative not only powers the airport but also contributes to the grid, supplying energy to other airports in Karnataka.

Under the Smart Cities Mission, Hubballi-Dharwad has completed several projects to improve urban living. Notable developments include the renovation of Mahatma Gandhi Park, the transformation of Tolankere Lake into a recreational space, and the construction of a multi-level car parking complex at Court Circle. The city has also implemented a public bicycle-sharing system, "Savari," promoting green mobility.

The Hubballi-Dharwad Smart City Limited (HDSCL) has been recognized for its efforts, receiving the SKOCH Silver Award in Municipal Governance in 2025.

Transportation infrastructure is also receiving attention. The Hubballi-Ankola railway project, a 164.44 km line, is undergoing revisions to enhance connectivity between the city and the western coast.

Collectively, these infrastructure projects signify Hubballi's commitment to becoming a modern, sustainable urban center, poised to play a pivotal role in Karnataka's growth trajectory.
