Synopsis

In a push to accelerate electric vehicle (EV) adoption, the Maharashtra government has announced toll-free travel for EVs on major expressways like the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, Atal Setu, and Samruddhi Mahamarg. The new electric mobility policy includes converting all government vehicles to EVs within five years and supporting battery production and public charging networks. Charging stations will be mandated every 25 km on highways, and petrol pumps will be encouraged to install EV chargers. The policy aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions by one million tonnes by 2030, with added incentives like tax exemptions, low-interest loans, and viability gap funding for infrastructure projects.

In a boost for electric vehicle (EV) adoption, the Maharashtra government has announced toll-free travel for EVs on key expressways including the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, Atal Setu, and Samruddhi Mahamarg. This incentive is part of the state's new electric mobility policy, which aims to convert all government vehicles to EVs within five years and position Maharashtra as a leading state in EV adoption.

The new policy will support the setup of battery production zones and charging infrastructure across industrial and urban areas. State officials confirmed that all government departments will soon begin converting their official vehicles to EVs. Private sector firms, logistics providers, and public transport operators will also be given incentives for adopting cleaner mobility options.

To improve EV usage on highways, the state will mandate charging stations at least every 25 kilometers on key routes. Petrol pumps on highways like Samruddhi and Mumbai-Pune Expressway will be encouraged to install at least one charging point. Additionally, ST stands and other public transport terminals will be equipped with fast chargers to support buses and shared mobility vehicles.

By 2030, the state aims to reduce 205 tonnes of PM 2.5 emissions and eliminate one million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions through EV use. To make EVs affordable, the Maharashtra Energy Development Agency (MEDA) is working with stakeholders to provide low-interest loans, exemptions from motor vehicle tax, and discounts on EV insurance.

At present, EV owners in Maharashtra are exempt from both motor vehicle registration charges and toll taxes on selected expressways. Officials say these exemptions will continue, and more road stretches could be added. The government also plans to offer viability gap funding for setting up urban charging depots and is inviting private firms to partner on EV infrastructure projects.
