Synopsis

BEST is set to roll out last-mile connectivity for Mumbai Metro Line 3’s remaining phases, introducing 27 new bus routes to connect commuters with underground stations. Ten routes will serve the Dharavi to Acharya Atre Chowk stretch using 29 buses, linking areas like Dadar, Wadala, and Mahim. For the Acharya Atre to Cuffe Parade stretch, 17 more routes are in planning. BEST will adopt a ring-route model and upgrade station exits with bus bays. A tie-up with Google Maps will provide real-time bus tracking and ETAs, enhancing commuter convenience and supporting non-motorised transit across high-density zones.

The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking is preparing to roll out last-mile bus connectivity for the remaining two phases of the Mumbai Metro Line 3. These services are aimed at helping commuters easily reach stations on the underground metro corridor, which runs from Aarey to Cuffe Parade. The plan will be implemented in phases, with a mix of ring-route and shuttle buses serving locations up to 1.4 km from metro stations.

For the second phase of Metro 3—between Dharavi and Acharya Atre Chowk—BEST will operate 10 new routes using 29 buses. These will connect key residential and commercial zones such as Lower Parel, Nehru Science Centre, Wadala, Dadar, and Mahim. The buses will follow ring routes, helping passengers travel within nearby neighbourhoods without needing personal vehicles or autos.

For the final phase of Metro 3, which runs from Acharya Atre Chowk to Cuffe Parade, BEST is planning 17 new routes. A detailed implementation plan is currently underway, and infrastructure at many of these metro station exits is being upgraded to accommodate bus bays and safe passenger pick-up areas.

To simplify commuter experience, BEST is also tying up with Google Maps to display real-time bus routes, vehicle locations, and expected time of arrival (ETA). This is expected to reduce waiting times and improve route planning for metro riders, particularly in areas with poor walkability or long gaps between stops.

The ring-route model has been adopted based on successful pilots during the first phase of Metro 3 (Aarey to BKC), which went live in October 2023. BEST has confirmed that this strategy will be scaled up across the remaining network to cover over 50 proposed routes and improve access in dense residential areas, corporate parks, and hospitals.
