Synopsis

Samsung is set to invest INR 1,000 crore to expand its Sriperumbudur facility near Chennai, reinforcing its commitment to India's manufacturing sector. The plant, which already contributes nearly 20% of Samsung's USD 12 billion India sales, will see modernization of production lines and increased job creation. This move follows a previous INR 1,600 crore investment in the state, as Samsung scales up mobile and consumer electronics output. The Sriperumbudur unit benefits from strong logistics and proximity to ports, aligning with Tamil Nadu's push to become an electronics manufacturing hub, alongside investments from global giants like Foxconn, Pegatron, and Tata Electronics.

In a significant boost to Tamil Nadu's manufacturing sector, South Korean tech giant Samsung is planning an investment of INR 1,000 crore at its Sriperumbudur facility near Chennai. The investment aims to expand operations at the company's sprawling plant, which already plays a major role in Samsung's India strategy, accounting for nearly one-fifth of its USD 12 billion annual sales in the country.

The Sriperumbudur factory, operated by Samsung India Electronics, is spread across 100 acres and currently employs around 6,000 workers. The upcoming investment is expected to support the modernization of production lines and create additional job opportunities.

Samsung's move comes at a time when several global technology majors are expanding their manufacturing footprint in India, encouraged by government incentive schemes and rising demand for electronics locally and globally. The investment plan reportedly includes setting up new test lines and boosting the production of mobile devices and consumer electronics.

Earlier this year, Samsung had announced an additional outlay of INR 1,600 crore for another manufacturing project in Tamil Nadu, underscoring its commitment to deepening its presence in India amid growing global trade tensions.

The Sriperumbudur facility, established two decades ago, is strategically located close to major seaports and highways, offering logistical advantages for both domestic supply and exports.

Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu government continues to position the state as a major electronics manufacturing hub, attracting investments from other global players like Foxconn, Pegatron, and Tata Electronics.
