The Gopal Krishna Gokhale bridge in Andheri is on track to complete its main construction by April 30, 2025, according to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials. Although the structure itself is nearly finished, traffic opening will depend on further inspections and approvals from railway authorities. Minor works such as signage and barriers will continue post-completion. The bridge will improve east-west connectivity in Andheri, alleviating traffic on SV Road and the Western Express Highway. Meanwhile, the Vikhroli flyover project, though 95% complete, faces delays due to complex engineering challenges, with a completion target set for May 31.
The long-awaited Gopal Krishna Gokhale bridge in Andheri is on track to complete its main construction work by April 30, according to updates from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). However, a final decision on opening the bridge to traffic will be taken only after further inspections and discussions with railway officials. Civic officials confirmed that minor allied works, such as signage and barriers, will continue even after the main structure is finished.
The Gokhale bridge connects key parts of Andheri East and West over the railway line. It had been partially closed for reconstruction, causing significant traffic disruptions. In addition to completing the main bridge, work on the connector to CD Barfiwala bridge and related road widening is nearing the final stages. BMC officials said that curing of the concrete slabs has been completed, and finishing touches like painting, installing no-parking barriers, noise barriers, and road signs are now underway.
While Gokhale bridge is almost ready, the Vikhroli flyover project is slightly delayed. About 95% of the work, including the eastern and western side ramps, is complete. However, a difficult curve near St. Joseph School and the span over the railway lines have required more careful engineering, leading to slower progress. Civic engineers are targeting May 31 to finish the flyover's remaining work, such as erecting deck slabs, placing road barriers, and finalizing markings.
BMC officials are keen to open both Gokhale bridge and the Vikhroli flyover before the start of the monsoon, which typically causes traffic congestion. The Gokhale bridge, once open, will significantly ease east-west connectivity for Andheri residents and bring relief to surrounding road networks such as SV Road and Western Express Highway. However, officials are waiting for the final nod from the Western Railway authorities before announcing a traffic plan.
The completion of these projects is part of Mumbai's larger effort to upgrade aging infrastructure and improve road connectivity. As more projects near completion in the coming months, residents can expect better traffic flow across key suburban areas. However, timely permissions and careful planning will be crucial to avoid last-minute delays, especially with the monsoon season approaching.
