The Gujarat government has introduced a relaxation in the liquor consumption rules within GIFT City in Gandhinagar, aiming to attract more businesses and professionals to the region. The new regulations allow employees to apply for temporary or group liquor permits without requiring endorsement from their employers. This move, which builds on the 2023 policy that permitted alcohol consumption in designated areas of GIFT City, is expected to enhance the city's business-friendly environment. Industry leaders have welcomed this development, viewing it as a strategic step to foster growth and investment.
To increase the allure of Gandhinagar's GIFT City as a worldwide business center, the Gujarat government has loosened its regulations on alcohol consumption, giving local professionals more freedom. Under the newly introduced rules, employees within GIFT City can now directly apply for temporary or group liquor permits, simplifying the process significantly. Previously, applicants had to obtain a recommendation from their employer's representative, a requirement that has now been waived.
To obtain a permit, employees are now required to submit Form A-1 to an authorized officer within GIFT City. After the form is verified, the employee will be issued a Liquor Access Permit card, granting them the ability to consume alcohol in designated areas. The permit is valid for a temporary period, or until a group permit is issued, allowing employees more flexibility in managing their personal and professional activities. Furthermore, permit holders can use Form A-2 to recommend up to five guests to join them in licensed wine and dine areas within GIFT City, provided they accompany them.
This relaxation of rules is a continuation of a policy change made in December 2023, when the Gujarat government amended the Gujarat Prohibition Act, 1949. The amendment had already permitted the consumption of alcohol within specific venues such as hotels, restaurants, and clubs inside GIFT City. However, the previous permit system was considered cumbersome, requiring both employers' endorsements and multiple forms for group permits. The latest changes aim to streamline this process, making it easier for professionals to work and live in the city without facing bureaucratic hurdles.
The relaxation of liquor consumption regulations is being viewed as an essential step toward making GIFT City more business-friendly. According to industry experts, policies that cater to the needs of professionals living and working in such business hubs can significantly improve the region's attractiveness to international companies and investors. As GIFT City positions itself to be a global financial and technological center, policies like these are seen as key to enhancing its competitiveness on the global stage.
The changes are expected to provide a much-needed boost to the local economy by encouraging more professionals to settle in the area, thereby increasing demand for services and infrastructure. Although the exact impact of the relaxation is still to be determined, it is seen as part of a broader strategy to create a dynamic ecosystem for businesses to thrive in. The Gujarat government's decision to loosen these restrictions is aligned with its goal of making GIFT City one of the leading destinations for foreign investment in India.
GIFT City is increasingly becoming a beacon for businesses looking for a well-regulated, cosmopolitan environment with world-class infrastructure. The government's efforts to create a conducive environment for both business operations and employee satisfaction are likely to yield positive results in the coming months and years, contributing to the area's sustained growth.
