A new 550-metre underpass connecting Mumbai's Coastal Road to the Worli-Sewri corridor is set to open by early May, offering southbound motorists from Dadar and Prabhadevi direct access to Nariman Point and Marine Drive. Built to ease congestion at Worli-Haji Ali, the tunnel will allow seamless entry onto the Coastal Road without using crowded city streets. Finishing works like signage, lighting, and surfacing are underway. Part of the 10.58-km Coastal Road project, the underpass is expected to significantly cut travel time to Mumbai's central business districts and improve traffic flow along the city's key commercial arteries.
A new 550-metre-long underpass connecting Mumbai's Coastal Road to the Worli-Sewri corridor is expected to become operational by early May, according to officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
This upcoming underpass will offer motorists a direct link from Dadar and Prabhadevi towards the Mumbai Coastal Road without needing to exit onto busy city roads. Civic officials said the tunnel is being built with the aim of easing congestion at the Worli-Haji Ali area, where traffic jams are common.
Once fully operational, vehicles travelling southbound will be able to seamlessly access Nariman Point and Marine Drive via the Coastal Road and the Bandra-Worli Sea Link extension (BWSL). The underpass will exclusively cater to southbound traffic, providing two key options once they exit - heading towards Bandra or continuing towards Marine Drive and Nariman Point.
Construction of side works, signage, lighting and surfacing is underway and expected to be completed over the next few weeks. Officials stated that the tunnel will significantly reduce travel time for commuters using the Dadar-Prabhadevi route to access the city's central business districts.
The underpass begins near the Khodadad Circle on Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan Road and connects directly to the coastal road link, eliminating the need to travel through local road junctions.
The project is part of the larger 10.58-km Mumbai Coastal Road stretch, which is opening in phases through 2024-26. Authorities are also working on completing ancillary works such as signages, parkings, and lighting before the tunnel is opened to the public.
