The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has issued an interim order prohibiting any illegal construction in Jaypee Wishtown, a township in Noida. The order addresses allegations of unauthorized developments in the green zone of the township, which is situated on the Yamuna riverbed and falls within the Okhla Bird Sanctuary's eco-sensitive zone. The NGT directed local authorities to prevent such activities and barred Jaypee Infratech Ltd from proceeding with construction in violation of environmental norms until the next hearing scheduled for August.
An interim order was issued earlier this week by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) ordering authorities to stop any unlawful construction in the Noida township of Jaypee Wishtown. The tribunal's decision came in response to allegations that Jaypee Infratech Ltd had undertaken significant unauthorized changes in the township's green areas, violating environmental norms. The township is situated on the Yamuna riverbed and lies within the eco-sensitive zone of the Okhla Bird Sanctuary.
The NGT bench, comprising Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava, Judicial Member Justice Sudhir Agarwal, and Expert Member Afroz Ahmad, observed that despite repeated opportunities, neither the Noida Authority nor Jaypee Infratech Ltd had submitted responses to the allegations. In light of this, the bench emphasized that construction activities on the floodplain of the Yamuna River or in violation of environmental norms could not be permitted to continue.
Consequently, the tribunal directed the concerned authorities to ensure that no illegal construction was carried out by the realtor on the floodplain zone of the Yamuna, in violation of the River Ganga (Rejuvenation, Protection, and Management) Authorities Order, 2016. Additionally, the NGT barred Jaypee Infratech Ltd from proceeding with any construction activities that contravened environmental regulations until the next hearing, scheduled for August 21.
By halting unauthorized construction in ecologically sensitive areas like the Yamuna floodplain and the Okhla Bird Sanctuary's eco-sensitive zone, the tribunal has set a precedent for stringent enforcement of environmental norms in urban planning. This move serves as a reminder to developers and authorities alike about the importance of adhering to environmental regulations to maintain the delicate balance between development and conservation.
