Mumbai's long-awaited integrated transport app, Mumbai One, is expected to launch on May 1, aiming to streamline city travel across metro, suburban rail, and buses. Developed by MMRDA, the app will let commuters plan multi-modal journeys, view fares, and eventually purchase tickets via UPI or wallet payments. While metro integration will be available at launch, full integration with Indian Railways and BEST buses may take longer. Currently in testing, the app faces technical challenges like real-time fare updates. Experts say seamless functioning could be a game-changer for Mumbai's fragmented public transport network, improving commuter convenience across the city.
After years of planning and development, Mumbai's much-awaited integrated public transport app - Mumbai One - could finally be launched on May 1, officials said. The app, developed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), aims to simplify travel across Mumbai's vast network of metro, suburban railways, and buses.
The Mumbai One app is designed to allow commuters to plan their journeys by combining multiple modes of transport - metro, suburban trains, and buses - into a single route option. Commuters will be able to view fares, plan their trips based on real-time traffic and transit updates, and eventually purchase tickets through the app using UPI or wallet payments.
Currently in its testing phase, engineers are working to fix several bugs, particularly ensuring that journey plans generated by the app align with optimal routes across the city's busy network. For instance, if a commuter wants to travel from Airport Road to Bandra, the app should suggest a route via metro and suburban rail in a time-efficient manner. Officials noted that real-time fare integration across different transport utilities remains a key technical challenge still being addressed.
While the app will offer integration with Mumbai Metro's services immediately, integration with Indian Railways and BEST buses is still under discussion. For now, the Mumbai One app may redirect users to other apps like Chalo (for BEST buses) or IRCTC (for suburban trains) for booking tickets.
Transport experts say the Mumbai One app has huge potential, given Mumbai's fragmented transport network. However, concerns remain about whether the app will offer true integration from day one or only partial services.
With the app slated for a May 1 launch, coinciding with Maharashtra Day, Mumbai's commuters could soon experience a significant shift in how they navigate the city's dense public transport system.
