In a stringent move to combat dust pollution, the Delhi Environment Department recently imposed an INR 40 lakh fine on a commercial construction project near Indira Gandhi International Airport for failing to adhere to dust control norms. The Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) found multiple violations, including lack of dust barriers, uncovered construction materials, and absence of vehicle wheel washing protocols. Additionally, four other construction sites received show-cause notices, each facing an INR 10 lakh penalty. These actions align with the ongoing enforcement of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) Stage I, aimed at curbing pollution during poor air quality days.
The Delhi Environment Department has recently imposed an INR 40 lakh fine on a commercial construction project near Indira Gandhi International Airport for violating dust control regulations. This action follows instructions from Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa to intensify enforcement against pollution offenders. Key violations included the absence of dust and wind-breaking walls, uncovered loose soil and construction materials, inadequate water sprinkling on unpaved surfaces, and failure to wash vehicle wheels entering or exiting the site. Furthermore, the site was not registered on the DPCC's web portal, a mandatory requirement for all construction and demolition projects in the National Capital Region with a plot size of 500 square meters or more.
In addition to the INR 40 lakh fine, four other construction sites have been issued show-cause notices, each facing an INR 10 lakh penalty. These actions are part of the ongoing enforcement of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) Stage I, which is implemented during days of poor air quality to mitigate pollution.
Minister Sirsa emphasized the government's commitment to improving air quality in Delhi, stating that the health and lives of residents are paramount. He assured that strict actions would continue to be taken against violators to ensure cleaner air for all citizens.
The recent fines and notices serve as a stern reminder to construction projects in Delhi about the importance of adhering to dust control norms. With the implementation of GRAP Stage I and the Environment Department's proactive measures, there is a clear message that non-compliance will lead to significant penalties.
