Residents of Vijayawada have initiated a movement to upgrade the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) into the Greater Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (GVMC). A recent online survey revealed that 90.1% of participants support this transformation. The city's rapid expansion has led to challenges in providing basic civic amenities in newly integrated areas. An upgrade to GVMC would encompass an area of 300 to 400 sq km, making it the largest municipal corporation in Andhra Pradesh.
In a significant development earlier this week, residents of Vijayawada have advocated for the elevation of the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) to the Greater Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (GVMC). This proposal has garnered substantial public support, with a recent online survey indicating that 90.1% of the 4,150 respondents favor the transformation.?
Established on April 1, 1888, the VMC was upgraded to a selection-grade municipality in 1960 and later became a municipal corporation in 1981. Over the years, neighboring panchayats such as Gunadala, Patamata, Bhavani Puram, and Payakapuram were merged into the corporation limits. Currently, the VMC spans 61.88 square kilometers.?
However, the city's rapid expansion in recent years has led to the inclusion of additional areas like Kanuru, Yanamalakuduru, Poranki, Tadigadapa, Enikepadu, and Prasadampadu into the urban fold. This growth has posed challenges in providing essential services such as sanitation and drinking water to these newly integrated localities. Residents have expressed concerns over the adequacy of civic amenities in these areas.?
Advocates for the upgrade argue that transforming the VMC into GVMC would enable more efficient governance and better resource allocation to meet the needs of the expanded urban population. The proposed GVMC would encompass an area between 300 to 400 square kilometers, positioning it as the largest municipal corporation in the state.?
While the proposal has received overwhelming public support, its implementation will require careful planning and coordination between various stakeholders to address the challenges posed by rapid urbanization. The transformation aims to enhance the quality of life for residents and ensure sustainable development in the region.
