Synopsis

Earlier this week, Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) launched a large-scale demolition drive targeting unauthorised constructions in Belapur, Nerul and Vashi. The operation, conducted under the directives of Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde and supervised by senior officials, included action against illegal structures despite prior notices. In Belapur, illegal constructions on plots in Sector 15 were removed, while in Nerul's Sector 28, 28 unauthorised huts on CIDCO land were demolished. Additionally, in Vashi's Sector 31A and nearby areas, a total of 110 unauthorised huts were cleared. These operations involved local police, municipal staff, and machinery including JCBs.

In a decisive move against illegal development, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) recently undertook a robust demolition drive across its Belapur, Nerul, and Vashi divisions. The encroachment removal action was initiated following repeated notices to the concerned parties, which went unheeded. Acting on directives from Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde, and under the supervision of Additional Commissioner (2) Dr Rahul Gethe and Deputy Commissioner (Encroachment) Mr Bhagwat Doifode, the encroachment department conducted this operation.

In Belapur, A-ward authorities had earlier issued notices under Section 53 (1A) of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning (MRTP) Act to the chairperson and secretary of Suncity Society, located on Plots 62, 63 and 64 in Sector 15. The notice had instructed the society to voluntarily dismantle the unauthorised structures. However, since no action was taken, NMMC proceeded with demolition of the illegal construction.

Simultaneously, in Nerul's Sector 28, opposite the Vitthal Rukmini temple, 28 unauthorised huts had been erected on CIDCO land. The encroachers were also directed to clear the area voluntarily, but after they failed to do so, A-ward officials, with full security arrangements and demolition machinery, removed the structures.

For both operations, support was extended by Assistant Commissioner Dr Amol Palve, Junior Engineer Mr Atmaram Kale, other municipal staff, and encroachment police. A total of 10 labourers and a JCB machine were deployed for the demolition efforts.

Earlier this past week, a similar drive was carried out in the Vashi division, where illegal settlements were identified under the high-pressure pipelines in Sector 31A and other CIDCO/NMMC lands in Vashigaon. On that occasion, a total of 110 illegal huts were demolished. The drive was supervised by Assistant Commissioner Mrs Alka Mahapurkar and Junior Engineer Mr Mangesh Meher, with presence of security personnel and local police. Labour and JCB machines were also used during this operation.

NMMC has indicated that such enforcement actions will continue with increased intensity to curb illegal encroachments across the city.

The recent operations also highlight the coordination between municipal officers, law enforcement, and ground workers, an essential element in executing such massive clean-up drives. As the city grows rapidly, these actions signal that illegal developments will no longer be tolerated, and civic authorities are prepared to act decisively to uphold planning norms and preserve public land.
