Eleven lakes in Malad will be rejuvenated over the next two years as part of 'Project Mumbai,' Union Minister Piyush Goyal announced. Phase 1 has already begun with five lakes, while Phase 2 will cover six larger, more degraded waterbodies. The initiative includes desilting, sewage diversion, and the creation of walking paths, seating zones, and biodiversity improvements. Lakes like Lotus Talao, Hanuman Nagar Talao, and Somnath Talao are among those listed. With support from over 500 companies, officials aim to complete the work by 2026, making this north Mumbai's largest multi-lake restoration effort to date.
In a significant urban waterbody restoration move, eleven lakes in Malad are set to undergo rejuvenation over the next two years, Union Minister Piyush Goyal announced on Saturday. Phase 1 of the beautification plan is already underway, marking the start of a long-term initiative to restore these ecologically important sites.
The rejuvenation project, part of the broader 'Project Mumbai' initiative, includes cleaning, landscaping, and creating civic amenities like walking paths, seating areas, and community spaces. The project will also explore nature-based solutions and low-cost interventions to restore water quality and improve biodiversity.
The lakes identified for restoration include Lotus Talao (Malvani), Hanuman Nagar Talao, Harbadevi Talao, Vanala Talao, Dalitwadi Talao, Jai Talao (Gaavdev Talao), Takurwadi Talao, Kajupada Talao, Somnath Talao, Sunil Talao (Gorai), and Patelwadi Talao (Madi).
Phase 1 will begin immediately with five lakes that are easier to access and less complex to rejuvenate. The remaining six, which are larger and more degraded, will follow in Phase 2, using insights gained from the initial phase.
Many of the rejuvenation works will involve lake desilting, sewage diversion, silt traps, and rainwater harvesting systems. According to officials, over 500 companies have already responded positively to sponsor elements of the initiative.
This is the first time such a large-scale, multi-lake initiative is being launched in north Mumbai. Once completed, the rejuvenated lakes will provide improved public amenities, boost ground water recharge, and support biodiversity in urban settings.
Officials aim to complete most of the rejuvenation by 2026, setting a precedent for similar efforts in other parts of Mumbai.
