Synopsis

Central Railway has successfully dismantled all seven girders of the century-old Sion Road Over Bridge (ROB), a key step in adding the 5th and 6th railway lines between Kurla and Parel. The final girder, in place since 1912, was removed during a five-hour block on Sunday. The ROB, a crucial east-west link connecting Dharavi, LBS Marg, and the Eastern Express Highway, was closed earlier, causing traffic congestion on alternate routes like the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road. The dismantling supports Mumbai's rail network expansion to ease commuter load. Plans for a new bridge are underway, with broader upgrades across Mumbai's railway infrastructure in progress.

The Central Railway (CR) successfully dismantled seven girders of the iconic Sion Road Over Bridge (ROB) to pave the way for the addition of 5th and 6th railway lines between Kurla and Parel. The dismantling work was completed during a block in the suburban section on Sunday evening.

A senior official from Central Railway confirmed that the seventh and final girder, which had been in place since 1912, was removed after a five-hour-long block. This marks the completion of the critical de-launching process, which was carried out smoothly, the official added.

The Sion ROB has long served as an important east-west connector, linking key zones such as Dharavi, LBS (Lal Bahadur Shastri) Marg, and the Eastern Express Highway. For over a century, it functioned as a vital corridor for vehicular traffic in the city. Its closure, however, has led to considerable congestion on alternate routes, especially the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road.

The dismantling was undertaken to facilitate railway line augmentation, an initiative central to Mumbai's ongoing efforts to decongest the suburban railway network, especially with rising passenger volumes. The addition of the 5th and 6th lines will significantly improve connectivity between CSMT and Kalyan, easing the burden on the city's lifeline.

CR officials have not yet announced the timeline for the construction of a new ROB to replace the dismantled one. However, sources indicate that coordination with civic bodies and urban planners is underway to finalize a new structure.

The Sion ROB's dismantling is part of a broader modernisation push that also includes similar upgrades at other old ROBs and FOBs (Foot Over Bridges) across Mumbai's aging railway infrastructure.

As Mumbai races to enhance both its suburban rail and metro systems, such transformations reflect the city's shift toward integrated and future-ready transport networks.
