Synopsis

Earlier this week, the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (KMC) reclaimed 11 commercial shops adjacent to the historic Keshavrao Bhosale Natyagruha. This action is part of a broader redevelopment initiative aimed at restoring the auditorium, which suffered fire damage in August 2024. Final notices were issued to 14 tenants under Section 81(B)(1) of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act, resulting in 11 vacating voluntarily, while legal proceedings continue with the remaining three. The state government has sanctioned INR 25 crore for the restoration, with the third phase of tenders worth INR 11.77 crore recently released.

In a decisive move earlier this week, the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (KMC) reclaimed 11 commercial shops situated near the Keshavrao Bhosale Natyagruha. This action is part of an extensive redevelopment plan for the historic auditorium, which was significantly damaged by a fire in August 2024.

The reclamation process was conducted under substantial police presence to ensure order. Final notices were served to 14 tenants on March 11, 2025, under Section 81(B)(1) of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act. Estate officer Vilas Salokhe noted that 11 tenants complied and vacated their premises, while legal proceedings are ongoing with the remaining three.

The redevelopment project has been structured into five phases, with a total budget of INR 25 crore approved by the state government. The first phase of restoration is nearing completion, and the second phase is anticipated to commence by the end of April. Recently, KMC released tenders worth INR 11.77 crore for the third phase, with the submission deadline set for Thursday.

The Keshavrao Bhosale Natyagruha holds significant cultural value for Kolhapur, and its restoration is a priority for the civic body. The redevelopment aims to enhance public utility spaces and preserve the auditorium's historical essence.

By balancing legal procedures with developmental goals, KMC is setting a precedent for urban restoration projects. The successful execution of this project could serve as a model for similar initiatives aimed at revitalizing historic structures while accommodating modern urban needs.
