Uttar Pradesh has announced an ambitious plan to install 8 lakh rooftop solar systems by March 2027 under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Yojana. Led by UPNEDA and tracked via the CM's dashboard, the state aims to install 2.65 lakh systems in 2024-25, averaging 22,000 per month. Over 1 lakh systems are already operational, with 10.73 lakh applications received as of March 2025. Supported by trained vendors and credit schemes, the initiative boosts household energy independence. With states like Maharashtra and Gujarat advancing rooftop solar, UP's aggressive rollout marks a significant move toward decentralized clean energy and rural power stability.
The Uttar Pradesh government has outlined a bold plan to install 8 lakh rooftop solar systems across the state by March 2027, under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Yojana. The initiative, which was launched in February 2024, is being positioned as a flagship green energy drive aimed at reducing household power dependency and promoting solar self-sufficiency.
For the ongoing financial year, the state has set a target of 2.65 lakh installations, which translates to nearly 22,000 installations per month - or an average of 300 systems per district, as per a government statement issued on Sunday.
The implementation is being led by the Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA) and monitored via the Chief Minister's dashboard, enabling real-time tracking at the district, DISCOM, municipal corporation, and municipality levels.
So far, the results have been promising. Over 1 lakh rooftop solar plants have already been installed in UP, with daily completions crossing 500 units and around 11,000 units being added every month. According to officials, 10.73 lakh applications have been received till March 2025, with vendor listings and installation processes currently in full swing.
To support the rollout, more than 2,500 vendors have been empanelled and nearly 1,800 of them have undergone formal training. These training sessions are being conducted with support from the National Institute of Entrepreneurship and Small Business Development and the Ministry of Skill Development. In addition, vendors are being provided with access to loans and credit guarantee schemes to boost their operational capacity.
This large-scale push comes amid growing national momentum around rooftop solar. Maharashtra, for instance, has recently expanded its net metering policy to encourage urban residential installations, while Gujarat continues to lead in residential rooftop adoption due to strong subsidy frameworks. With UP now aggressively joining the solar race, it reflects a broader trend of states mobilising under central schemes to meet India's clean energy goals.
If UP meets its 2027 goal, it would mark a significant step toward making solar power a household norm, particularly in semi-urban and rural areas where power stability remains a challenge.
