Indira Gandhi International Airport's Terminal 2 is undergoing a major six-month redevelopment to enhance infrastructure and passenger experience. Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) plans to install six advanced Passenger Boarding Bridges, upgrade HVAC systems, and introduce new skylit ceilings for improved energy efficiency and ambience. The revamp includes a high-resolution Flight Information Display System (FIDS), weather-protective canopies, and accessibility improvements for reduced mobility passengers. These upgrades aim to boost turnaround efficiency, meet rising passenger demand, and align T2 with global airport standards. As IGI Airport surpasses 70 million annual passengers, the T2 overhaul is key to supporting India's growing aviation sector.
The Indira Gandhi International Airport's Terminal 2 is headed for a significant makeover, with Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) announcing a comprehensive infrastructure and passenger experience upgrade. The plan includes introducing state-of-the-art boarding bridges, enhanced thermal and ventilation systems, and major improvements in design, accessibility, and passenger flow. These upgrades aim to bring Terminal 2 in line with global standards amid rising passenger traffic and evolving demands for safer, efficient, and climate-conscious travel infrastructure.
A major component of the overhaul involves installing six new Passenger Boarding Bridges (PBBs), each sourced from South Korea and equipped with the latest technology to support automated docking, safety features, and integrated ramps for smoother boarding. These additions are aimed at reducing turnaround time for airlines and enhancing boarding efficiency for passengers.
In addition to the boarding bridges, the terminal will get advanced heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. These are designed to optimise energy usage and indoor air quality, reflecting a broader push toward sustainable airport infrastructure.
Adding to the aesthetic and experiential value, new ceilings with skylights will be installed to brighten the terminal's atmosphere and make use of natural light. Terminals in other Indian airports, such as Mumbai T2 and Bengaluru's Terminal 2, have adopted similar approaches, creating light-filled, open environments for passengers.
The project will also introduce a high-resolution Flight Information Display System (FIDS), giving real-time visibility of flight schedules with improved readability and accuracy. This system is expected to boost passenger movement clarity and reduce confusion during peak hours.
New canopies will be constructed outside the terminal to provide sheltered access and protect travelers from weather elements-a much-needed feature during Delhi's extreme summer and monsoon months.
DIAL officials confirmed that the refurbishments extend beyond just aesthetics. They also aim to prepare Terminal 2 for future traffic expansion, enhance turnaround capabilities for airlines, and strengthen airport operations overall. The modifications have been designed keeping in mind increased passenger loads projected for 2024-25.
In line with global trends, there's also a focus on reduced mobility access (PRM) and passenger-centric digital features, with technology playing a central role in simplifying travel.
The Terminal 2 upgrade comes at a time when Indian airports are experiencing record traffic growth. IGI Airport recently crossed the 70 million annual passenger mark, placing it among the busiest in Asia. With the upcoming Jewar Noida International Airport and expansions at Mumbai and Bengaluru, the revamp of Delhi's T2 is critical to supporting India's aviation growth story.
