MMRDA has achieved a major milestone for Mumbai's Metro Line 7A with TBM 'Disha' completing a 1.67-km underground tunnel between Gundavali and the airport. The 3.4-km corridor, part of the Red Line 7 extension, includes elevated and underground sections and aims to boost east-west connectivity through key interchanges with Lines 2, 3, 6, and 9. Currently 59% complete, the metro line is expected to be operational by December 2025. Officials say this link will ease airport traffic and cut travel time. CM Shri Devendra Fadnavis hailed it as a step forward in strengthening Mumbai's infrastructure and commuter mobility.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has achieved a significant engineering milestone with a breakthrough in tunneling for Metro Line 7A, a 3.4-km underground corridor linking Gundavali to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA). The tunnel boring machine (TBM) named 'Disha' completed its 1.67-km drive, clearing the final hurdle in the underground alignment between the airport and Gundavali station.
Metro Line 7A is an extension of the existing Red Line 7 (Dahisar East to Gundavali), and includes both underground (2.5 km) and elevated (0.94 km) sections. The route will include two stations - Airport Colony (elevated) and CSMIA Terminal 2 (underground). The new corridor is expected to significantly enhance east-west metro connectivity in Mumbai and facilitate smoother travel between key locations, including the airport, Mira-Bhayander (via Line 9), and the western suburbs through interchange links with Lines 2, 3, 6, and 9.
The TBM, which began boring work in September 2023, had to navigate highly complex soil conditions and a congested urban underground network. CM Shri Devendra Fadnavis lauded the achievement, calling it a step toward strengthening Mumbai's infrastructure backbone.
As of now, Metro Line 7A is 59% complete. The corridor is expected to be fully complete by the end of the year, with commercial operations on the 22-km stretch scheduled to begin shortly after. The project also aligns with the larger metro development plan to ease pressure on congested airport roads and reduce travel time.
This underground link is one of several critical metro projects shaping the city's future transport grid. For instance, Metro Line 9 (Dahisar to Mira-Bhayander), Metro Line 3 (Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ), and Metro Line 2B (Mandale to Diamond Garden) are all set to transform regional mobility.
