Synopsis

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has successfully launched a 400-metric-ton open web girder over Central Railway's Diva-Vasai corridor for Metro Line 5, connecting Thane, Bhiwandi, and Kalyan. Installed using four cranes and 40 hydraulic jacks, the steel structure bridges a key gap between Mankoli and Durgadi Naka. This engineering feat over high-traffic railway tracks brings the 24-km corridor closer to completion by 2025. Once operational, Metro Line 5 will serve over 2 lakh commuters daily, easing congestion and linking with Metro Lines 4, 12, and suburban rail networks in one of Mumbai's busiest suburban regions.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has successfully launched a massive open web girder for Metro Line 5 over the heavily trafficked railway corridor near Diva station.

The open web girder, a special type of steel bridge structure used for metro viaducts over rail lines, has been placed to link Bhiwandi and Kalyan as part of the 24-km Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan corridor (Metro Line 5). The achievement brings the project a step closer to easing congestion in one of Mumbai's most densely populated suburban belts.

This portion of the route is particularly complex as it cuts across Central Railway's Diva-Vasai section, which sees high train frequency and limited construction windows. To execute the task, MMRDA used four cranes and 40 hydraulic jacks to lift the 400-metric-ton structure piece by piece and place it over a busy set of tracks running at ground level.

The open web girder-a structure known for its ability to span long distances without support piers-was assembled on site and lifted to a height of nearly 20 metres. According to engineers, this design allows for minimal disruption to existing railway traffic and road connectivity.

Unlike standard metro viaducts built on piers, open web girders are specifically designed for crossings over live railway lines or major arterial roads. This particular girder connects a key missing link between Mankoli station and Durgadi Naka, both key stations in the industrial and residential pockets of Thane and Kalyan.

Once operational, Metro Line 5 is expected to carry more than 2 lakh daily passengers, significantly improving public transit options in the Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan belt. It will also offer seamless integration with Metro Lines 4 and 12, the suburban rail network, and other bus and road transport systems.

The overall Metro 5 project is being built in phases, with work progressing steadily despite earlier land acquisition hurdles. Officials say the project remains on track for a 2025 completion, with the successful girder launch representing a major engineering and logistical feat.

With more such bridge sections being planned for critical urban intersections, the Metro 5 corridor continues to be a symbol of Mumbai's resolve to upgrade its public transport network and reduce road congestion in the suburbs.
