Synopsis

Preparations are underway for two new metro corridors in Gurgaon, aimed at strengthening connectivity between Old and New Gurgaon. The Haryana Mass Rapid Transport Corporation (HMRTC) has invited tenders for detailed project reports (DPRs). The first 17-km corridor will link Bhondsi to Gurgaon Railway Station, passing through Vatika Chowk, Subhash Chowk, Rajiv Chowk, and Sohna Chowk. The second, 13.6-km line, will connect Golf Course Extension Road with Sector 5, covering key hubs like Ardee City and Signature Tower. These metro lines aim to ease congestion, improve accessibility, and offer efficient transport, supporting Gurgaon's growing population and rapid urbanisation. Construction is expected to begin after DPR finalization.

Construction of the Millennium City Centre-Cyber City metro line is still several months away. However, preparations have begun for the development of two new metro corridors that will improve connectivity between Old and New Gurgaon. Last week, tenders were invited by the Haryana Mass Rapid Transport Corporation (HMRTC) for the preparation of detailed project reports (DPRs) for these two metro lines.

The first corridor, spanning 17 kilometres, is planned to connect Bhondsi with Gurgaon Railway Station. Designed to reduce congestion on Sohna Road and NH-8, this metro line will pass through key locations, including Vatika Chowk, Subhash Chowk, Rajiv Chowk, Sohna Chowk, Sector 4-7 Chowk, and Railway Road. Intersections with the Millennium City Centre-Cyber City metro line are planned at Subhash Chowk and Sector 5 stations. Additionally, an interchange with the upcoming rapid rail corridor is proposed at Rajiv Chowk.

The second corridor, with a length of 13.6 kilometres, will connect Golf Course Extension Road with Sector 5. This metro line aims to improve accessibility between corporate hubs and residential areas in Old Gurgaon. Important locations such as Hong Kong Market in Sector 57, Ardee City, Millennium City Centre, Signature Tower, Maharana Pratap Chowk, Atul Kataria Chowk, and Sheetla Mata Road will be covered under this corridor.

Due to its intersection with the yellow line of the Delhi Metro and the planned metro corridor to Cyber City, the Millennium City Centre station is expected to significantly benefit thousands of commuters travelling to newer sectors. The new corridors are anticipated to provide seamless connectivity, making daily travel more efficient for residents and professionals.

The decision to proceed with the DPR process was initially made during an HMRTC board meeting held in August last year. However, due to the enforcement of the model code of conduct for the Haryana Assembly elections in October, progress was delayed. Now that both state and civic elections have concluded, the metro project is back on track.

With rapid urbanisation and increasing vehicular traffic, the need for an efficient mass transit system has become essential. These new metro lines are seen as key solutions to enhancing mobility, reducing travel time, and providing a more sustainable mode of transportation for the city's residents.
