The Maharashtra state government has announced an ambitious plan to develop 45 aerial ropeways across key tourist destinations in the state, in partnership with the National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLML), a subsidiary of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). The project aims to enhance tourism and alleviate traffic congestion at popular sites such as the Elephanta Islands, Alibaug Fort, Matheran, Raigad, Pratapgad, Sinhagad Fort, and Mahabaleshwar. Additional locations identified for ropeway construction include Jejuri, Sajjangad, Ajinkyatara Fort, Thoseghar Waterfalls, and Renuka Temple. The ropeways will be executed under a public-private partnership model, with state agencies maintaining equity stakes.
The Maharashtra state government has unveiled an extensive plan to construct 45 aerial ropeways at prominent tourist spots across the state. The announcement was made following a cabinet decision last month, which gave final approval to the project. The initiative will be implemented in collaboration with the National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLML), a subsidiary of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), operating under the Union transport ministry.
As per the state government's statement, the development aims to boost tourism and reduce vehicular congestion at several high-traffic destinations. Among the sites selected for the ropeway projects are the Elephanta Islands, situated off Mumbai's eastern coast, Alibaug Fort, Kunakeshwar, Matheran hill station, Raigad, Pratapgad and Sinhagad forts, along with Mahabaleshwar hill station. Additional destinations include Khandoba Nimgaon in Khed, Jejuri, Sajjangad, Kaans Valley, Ajinkyatara Fort, Thoseghar Waterfalls, Uttareshwar Temple in Mahabaleshwar, and Renuka Temple in Nanded.
The land required for these developments will be leased to NHLML by state agencies for a period of 30 years. While the original plan involved agencies such as the Public Works Department (PWD), Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), and various local bodies, it has now been confirmed that NHLML will lead the execution of the entire project. The state agencies will, however, continue as equity partners, sharing both investments and revenues.
Authorities mentioned that the ropeway networks will offer seamless connectivity to historically significant and geographically challenging sites, thus improving accessibility for tourists. The construction is expected to begin soon, with priority given to locations such as Raigad Fort, Matheran, Alibaug Chowpatty to Alibaug Fort, and Elephanta Caves. Other key areas where work will be accelerated include Kunkeshwar Temple, Alibaug, Sinhagad Fort in Pune, Mahabaleshwar, Urmodi Dam to Kaas Pathar in Satara, and Jejuri in Pune district.
The memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the state and Central government was signed last year in February. However, the project's final clearance came only after the state cabinet's recent nod, which is expected to expedite the development process significantly.
As Maharashtra continues to grow as a major tourist hub, this ropeway development is set to redefine the travel experience for adventurers, history buffs, and nature lovers alike.
