Coimbatore is set to modernize its land records through a drone-based survey under the Digital India Land Records Modernization Programme (DILRMP). Covering a 10.44 sq km area across seven wards, the survey will map 73,263 buildings with high precision. Using ortho-rectified images, ETS, and DGPS, officials will update land records for public access within a year. Similar initiatives in Punjab, Delhi, and through the SVAMITVA Scheme have improved land governance across India. This project aims to enhance property documentation, reduce disputes, and support urban planning, making land ownership more transparent and efficient.

The survey will cover a 10.44 square kilometer area across seven wards of the Coimbatore Corporation, encompassing approximately 73,263 buildings. Preliminary work has begun, with drone operations expected to commence by the end of this month. The drone survey is anticipated to capture the entire area within three days.
Post-survey, ortho-rectified images (ORI) will be generated from the drone data. Teams from the Revenue and Municipal Administration Departments will conduct ground-truthing to validate and update property records. Advanced land-surveying equipment, including Electronic Total Stations (ETS) and Differential Global Positioning Systems (DGPS), will be employed to ensure precision. The entire process is expected to take one year, culminating in updated land ownership details being published online for public review.
This initiative aligns with India's broader efforts to modernize land records using drone technology. For instance, the SVAMITVA Scheme, launched in 2020, aims to map land parcels in approximately 660,000 villages using drones. The program seeks to establish clear property ownership in rural areas, reduce disputes, and facilitate access to financial services.
In New Chandigarh, Punjab, a drone survey was conducted in 2018 to acquire land for urban development. This survey facilitated accurate mapping and planning, ensuring systematic urban growth.
Similarly, in Delhi, a comprehensive drone survey covering 550 square kilometers was undertaken to identify and curb illegal encroachments, enhancing land management and urban planning.
