The Union government is set to provide around INR 22,400 crore in financial assistance to states under the upcoming Green Energy Corridor Phase-III (GEC-III), aimed at boosting intra-state transmission systems to support India's renewable energy goals. The total project outlay is nearly INR 56,000 crore, with states like Gujarat, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Andhra Pradesh as key beneficiaries. Gujarat will lead with projects worth over INR 29,000 crore. GEC-III will strengthen transmission infrastructure to help achieve India's target of 500 GW non-fossil energy capacity by 2030, building on progress from earlier GEC phases initiated in 2015.
The Union government is likely to extend financial assistance worth around INR 22,400 crore to several states for the development of intra-state transmission systems under the third phase of the Green Energy Corridor (GEC-III), according to individuals familiar with the discussions. This phase of the initiative was proposed in the Union Budget for the financial year 2025-26 and is aimed at accelerating India's energy transition goals.
The total outlay for GEC-III is projected to be nearly INR 56,000 crore. Of this, the Centre is expected to contribute 40% as financial assistance to the participating states, as per the sources. Gujarat, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Andhra Pradesh have been identified as the principal beneficiaries under this scheme. Notably, Gujarat is expected to undertake a significant portion of the projects, with investments exceeding INR 29,000 crore, while Rajasthan is set to implement projects estimated at more than INR 9,000 crore.
The scheme was allegedly discussed earlier this week during a meeting convened by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), attended by key stakeholders. Deliberations reportedly centred on expediting the development of transmission infrastructure to accommodate India's target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil energy capacity by 2030.
The first two phases of the Green Energy Corridor are at varying stages of implementation across ten states. The third phase of the Green Energy Corridor is intended to strengthen intra-state transmission infrastructure to facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources.
The Green Energy Corridor project, which started in 2015, includes the development of both Inter-State Transmission Systems (ISTS) and Intra-State Transmission Systems (InSTS). It also encompasses the establishment of Renewable Energy Management Centres (REMCs), control infrastructure, and energy storage systems.
