Synopsis

Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has launched a special amnesty scheme for property tax defaulters from March 1 to 31, 2024, to boost tax collection. Taxpayers paying between March 1 and 20 will receive a 75% waiver on penalties, while those paying between March 21 and 31 will get a 50% waiver. The scheme is voluntary and applies only if the full outstanding tax amount is paid at once. Payments can be made online or at NMMC offices. As of now, NMMC has collected INR 530 crore against a target of INR 801 crore. No concessions apply after March 31.

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has introduced a special amnesty scheme to encourage property tax defaulters to clear their dues by March 31, 2024. This initiative aims to boost tax collection for the fiscal year 2023-24 and offers substantial relief in penalties for late payments. The scheme, effective from March 1, provides taxpayers with an opportunity to benefit from penalty waivers if they settle their outstanding amounts within the stipulated time frame.

According to civic officials, taxpayers who clear their dues between March 1 and 20 will receive a 75% waiver on penalties, requiring them to pay only 25% of the penalty amount along with the principal tax. Those who pay between March 21 and 31 will be eligible for a 50% penalty waiver. However, the scheme mandates that the entire outstanding tax amount must be paid in full to avail of these benefits, as partial payments will not qualify for concessions.

NMMC officials clarified that participation in the scheme is voluntary, and defaulters are not obligated to take advantage of the offer. The initiative is designed to help recover property tax arrears within the municipal jurisdiction while providing relief to taxpayers burdened by penalties. Once the deadline of March 31 passes, no further concessions will be granted on penalties or interest.

To facilitate the payment process, NMMC has provided multiple channels for tax clearance. Taxpayers can apply for the amnesty scheme online through the official website (www.nmmc.gov.in) or via the NMMC e-connect mobile application. Payment can be made using debit cards, credit cards, internet banking, NEFT, or RTGS. Additionally, in-person payments are accepted at the NMMC headquarters, divisional offices, and designated payment centers through cash, cheques, or money orders.

Since April 2023, the NMMC tax department has collected over INR 530 crore in property tax, against the fiscal target of INR 801 crore. Officials expect the amnesty scheme to significantly contribute to bridging this gap by encouraging more taxpayers to settle their dues before the deadline.

The scheme is part of NMMC's broader efforts to enhance revenue collection while offering financial relief to property owners struggling with penalty charges. It also underscores the municipal corporation's commitment to ensuring compliance while addressing taxpayer concerns. As the deadline approaches, property owners are urged to take advantage of the limited-time waiver to avoid additional penalties and legal actions in the future.

With the final date set for March 31, 2024, taxpayers who wish to benefit from reduced penalties must act promptly. Beyond this period, normal penalty and interest rates will be reinstated, and no further relaxations will be provided.
