Employing computer-modelled designs, the building was made layer upon layer using specially developed materials with considerably lesser construction time, material losses, and working expenses but excellent precision and sturdiness.

A couple of years ago, L&T constructed India's first 3D printed two-storey building at their Kanchipuram facility near Chennai. The building was fabricated using a large-format concrete 3D printer supplied by COBOD and featured a locally sourced concrete mix developed by L&T. Before the two-storey project, L&T successfully printed a ground plus one floor house with reinforcement, also at their Kanchipuram facility. The structure was built using an in-house developed concrete mix and indigenously available materials within just 106 printing hours.

L&T is currently constructing India's first luxury villas using 3D printing technology in Bengaluru, as part of a Prestige Group project. Each villa spans over 4,000 sq ft and is estimated to cost more than Rs 10 crore. This project highlights the potential for high-end residential applications of this technology.

Across the world, 3D printing in construction has already been creating ripples. Nations like the UAE, the US, and the Netherlands have led the way with this technology, with the example of the world's first 3D-printed office in Dubai in 2016.
