Synopsis

The Noida Metro Rail Corporation (NMRC) is preparing to begin construction on the 11.56 km Metro corridor linking Botanical Garden station to Sector 142 within the next three months, pending final approval from the central government. This link, along with a proposed 5km route from Sector 51 to Knowledge Park-5, aims to enhance connectivity between Greater Noida and Delhi Metro's network. The project is expected to streamline travel to the upcoming Noida International Airport in Jewar and integrate seamlessly with the existing Aqua and Blue Line corridors. The NMRC board has allocated INR 2,254.35 crore for this initiative, which will feature eight new Metro stations. Additionally, a bus terminal at Botanical Garden station is being developed to further improve transport links.

The Noida Metro Rail Corporation (NMRC) has announced that construction work on the 11.56 km Metro corridor between Botanical Garden station and Sector 142 Metro station is set to begin within the next three months, as final approval from the central government is expected soon.

The NMRC is currently working on two Metro expansion projects - the 11.56 km Botanical Garden-Sector 142 link and a 5 km route from Noida's Sector 51 to Knowledge Park-5 in Greater Noida West. Detailed project reports (DPRs) for both projects have been submitted to the central government for final approvals.

At present, Noida Metro's 29.7km Aqua Line does not directly connect Greater Noida and Noida to the Delhi Metro network. There is also no smooth access to the Delhi Metro's Blue Line, which enters Noida via Mayur Vihar and terminates at the Electronic City Metro station (Sector 42). The proposed 11.56km Metro link aims to address this issue, facilitating direct connectivity and extending Metro access towards the upcoming Noida International Airport in Jewar.

Lokesh M, Chief Executive Officer of Noida Authority, emphasised that NMRC is expediting all necessary formalities to ensure construction begins without delays.

Ahead of the construction phase, NMRC has initiated a topography survey on the 11.56km route, which involves studying the geographic layout of the area, including the positioning of buildings, markets, and other infrastructure along the proposed Metro alignment. Alongside the survey, soil testing is also in progress to assess ground conditions along the route.

An NMRC official explained that the survey is critical to determining the optimal alignment while addressing potential challenges. The official added that the survey is nearing completion, with the central government expected to finalise the funding structure and approve the DPR shortly, thereby clearing the way for construction.

NMRC had previously approved the DPR for the 11.56 km Metro link from Botanical Garden station on Delhi Metro's Blue Line to Sector 142 station on Noida Metro's Aqua Line. The objective of this extension is to create a direct connection between Greater Noida and Delhi Metro's existing network by integrating with the Blue Line corridor.

The project received its initial approval during NMRC's 38th board meeting held in December 2023. According to Lokesh M, who also serves as NMRC's Managing Director, the Metro link is a crucial infrastructure development aimed at strengthening connectivity between Noida, Greater Noida, and Delhi.

Upon completion, the new Metro link will connect Greater Noida directly to Delhi Metro's Magenta Line, which services Indira Gandhi International Airport, as well as the Blue Line. The NMRC board has sanctioned INR 2,254.35 crore for the project's construction.

Botanical Garden station currently functions as the National Capital Region's (NCR) first interchange station, providing access to both the Blue Line (Noida City Centre to Dwarka Sector 21) and the Janakpuri West-Botanical Garden corridor. As per the DPR, the new Metro extension will include eight stations - Botanical Garden, Sector 44, Noida's new building in Sector 96, Sector 97, Sector 105, Sector 108, Sector 93, and Panchsheel Balak Inter College in Sector 91.

In addition to the Metro expansion, Noida Authority is also constructing a bus terminal at Botanical Garden station to facilitate seamless multi-modal transport options for commuters travelling between Delhi, Noida, and Greater Noida.

The projects reflect Noida's commitment to strengthening public transport infrastructure. As NMRC accelerates preparations, this expansion is expected to offer long-term benefits by reducing travel times and boosting regional connectivity.
