Synopsis

Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) currently operates seven sewage treatment plants utilising advanced Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) technology. To optimize the use of treated wastewater, tertiary treatment plants equipped with Ultra Filtration and Ultraviolet-Based Technology have been established at Koparkhairane and Airoli under the Central Government's Amrut Mission. The recycled water, post-tertiary treatment, is supplied to industries in the TTC Industrial Area for non-potable use. With redevelopment projects underway and declining rainfall leading to a drinking water shortage, the municipal corporation has mandated that developers utilise tertiary treated recycled water for approved construction projects to ensure efficient water management.

A total of seven sewage treatment plants are currently functional within the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) area, employing cutting-edge Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) technology. These plants process all wastewater generated in the region.

To maximise the utilisation of treated wastewater, the municipal corporation has established tertiary treatment plants at Koparkhairane and Airoli, incorporating Ultra Filtration and Ultraviolet-Based Technology. These facilities have been developed under the Central Government's AMRUT Mission. The recycled wastewater, following tertiary treatment, is supplied to industrial units in the TTC Industrial Area of Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation for non-potable purposes.

In Navi Mumbai, redevelopment work has commenced on hazardous buildings on CIDCO plots, along with development activities on other private plots. A significant portion of potable water is consumed for these construction projects. Meanwhile, a continuous decline in rainfall has resulted in a shortage of drinking water in the region.

To mitigate future water shortages and implement effective drinking water management, the municipal corporation, under the directives of Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailash Shinde, has made it mandatory for developers to use tertiary treated recycled water for construction activities approved by the Urban Planning Department within the NMMC jurisdiction.

With water scarcity becoming an increasing concern, Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation is taking proactive steps to ensure sustainable water management. This initiative not only supports environmental conservation but also promotes responsible urban development. As redevelopment and infrastructure projects continue, the implementation of such measures will be crucial in addressing long-term water challenges and ensuring efficient resource utilisation.
