As a result of chairing a consultation meeting with flat owners of Singanallur Housing Unit, Minister S Muthusamy has directed the Housing and Urban Development Department to consider building homes across the state in partnership with private developers. So far, twelve locations within the state have been identified as potential development sites.

Residential apartments were constructed in Singanallur over 35 years ago. Over the years, the buildings have witnessed considerable wear and tear which resulted in the residents approach the state government for assistance to redevelop and repair their buildings. A decision was thus taken to rebuild over 900 flats in Coimbatore through a joint development agreement with the housing unit association, a private builder or contractor and the state government.

According to the terms laid down in the meeting, the homes are to be constructed using Mivan technology which is an aluminium formwork system over a span of two years. For construction of these units, the private developer will be awarded with a fixed number of free for sale apartments in exchange. The agreement will be entered into for a period of 80 years. Six similar projects are in the final stages of discussion after residents of TNHB societies in various locations demanded additional homes.
