The gram panchayat has identified 9.5 acres of land in Malar village for this purpose. Majeed Harekala, the vice-president of the gram panchayat, stated that plans are underway to prepare a final list of beneficiaries. This new layout will feature necessary infrastructure to enhance the quality of life for the families, as envisioned by MLA Khader.
Historically, Harekala gram panchayat has been involved in land distribution, having allocated sites to families over two decades ago. Recently, the urgency to address the backlog of applications for housing has prompted local officials to take action. Currently, there are 279 applications pending for site allocations. Revenue officials, including the tahsildar and village accountant, are actively verifying these applications to ensure that all eligible families receive land free of cost.
The plan includes allotting individual plots of three cents each to the selected families. The identified land in Malar village, previously hilly terrain, has been leveled using earthmovers to prepare it for construction. Priority will be given to homeless families, and officials will conduct thorough checks to prevent any duplicate applications from being processed.
In addition to the Malar village project, the gram panchayat is exploring other revenue lands that can be developed into housing layouts. Proposals have been submitted to secure additional land for similar initiatives, reflecting a broader commitment to tackling homelessness in the region. Speaker Khader has emphasized the importance of expediting this process to ensure that all eligible families are accommodated.
This initiative not only aims to provide shelter but also aligns with government housing schemes, such as those managed by the Rajiv Gandhi Rural Housing Corporation Limited. Once the site allocations are finalized, the gram panchayat will reach out to the corporation to facilitate the construction of houses.
As the project moves forward, it highlights the importance of local governance in addressing community needs. The efforts of the Harekala village gram panchayat serve as a model for other regions facing similar challenges, demonstrating that with dedicated leadership and community support, significant progress can be made in improving living conditions for vulnerable populations.
