Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) has been granted INR 135 crore under the Smart City project to implement the Integrated Solid Waste Management and Sustainability (VIISWAS) initiative. Union Urban Development Minister Shri Manohar Lal announced the funding at a Jaipur conference, making Belagavi the only Karnataka city to secure this grant among 18 selected cities under the CITIIS 2.0 challenge. The project, to be completed by March 2028, will improve waste segregation, recycling, and waste-to-energy conversion. Cities like Surat and Indore have set examples in waste management, and Belagavi's initiative aligns with India's vision of sustainable urban development.
The Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) has been allocated a grant of INR 135 crore under the Smart City project for implementing the Integrated Solid Waste Management and Sustainability (VIISWAS) initiative. The announcement was made by Union Urban Development Minister Shri Manohar Lal during a conference in Jaipur, where the quadruple agreement for the project was signed. This initiative is aimed at enhancing Belagavi's solid waste management system, with a focus on sustainability, which is in line with India's larger vision of promoting cleaner and greener cities. The project, which has been in collaboration with the Belagavi Smart City and the BCC, was one of 84 proposals submitted under the CITIIS 2.0 challenge for smart city projects initiated by the central government. After a thorough evaluation process, 18 cities were selected, and Belagavi stands as the only city from Karnataka to secure this funding. This is a significant achievement, given the competition and the growing demand for smart city solutions across the nation.
As part of this initiative, Belagavi has created a unique framework for managing solid waste, which will be implemented over the next three years. The city is expected to complete this ambitious project by March 2028, aiming to not only improve waste collection and disposal but also ensure long-term sustainability through the efficient use of resources and environmentally friendly practices. The INR 135 crore grant will be utilized to improve the city's infrastructure, including setting up waste segregation systems, improving recycling methods, and introducing waste-to-energy plants.
The development comes at a time when other cities in India are also undertaking significant steps to improve waste management. For instance, Surat, a city in Gujarat, has been recognized as a leader in waste management by adopting a robust waste segregation system and becoming one of the first cities to introduce a waste-to-energy project. Surat's approach has led to a reduction in landfill usage, and the city now generates clean energy from its waste, creating a model for other cities to follow.
Similarly, Indore in Madhya Pradesh, which was awarded the title of the cleanest city in India under the Swachh Survekshan rankings for several years, has been at the forefront of integrating waste management solutions. Its efforts to implement decentralized waste management systems, door-to-door waste collection, and a waste segregation campaign have yielded impressive results, making it a great example for Belagavi and other cities undertaking similar projects.
Belagavi's push to modernize its waste management system is expected to contribute significantly to both environmental sustainability and local economic growth. As part of the Smart City mission, Belagavi aims to enhance its urban living conditions while focusing on environmentally friendly solutions, providing a model for other smaller cities looking to modernize their infrastructure. The support from the central government, through initiatives like CITIIS, is helping smaller cities such as Belagavi adopt the latest technologies in waste management and sustainability practices.
Through the collaborative efforts of the government, local authorities, and private stakeholders, Belagavi is positioning itself as a forward-thinking city that embraces modern solutions to tackle urban challenges.
